A first set of intermeshing gears transfer torque from the input member to the first layshaft. A second set of intermeshing gears transfer torque from the second layshaft to the second planetary gear set. Seven torque-transmitting mechanisms are engagable in different combinations to establish multiple forward speed ratios and a reverse speed ratio between the input member and the output member.

The multistage transmission of the present invention provides two or more gear ratios between the input member and the hub in accordance with the rotating direction of the transmission shaft.

In some aspects, the planetary gear set is configured to double the number of gear ratios.
