204 | TRANSIT SYSTEM EMPLOYING A TRACTION BELT | EP95916287.0 | 1995-04-12 | EP0755344A1 | 1997-01-29 | KUNCZYNSKI, Jan, K. |
A transit system including a vehicle (21), an elongated flexible traction belt (22) coupled to the vehicle (21) to apply a traction force sufficient to propel the vehicle along a transit path (23), and a drive assembly (24) coupled to displace the traction belt (22). The traction belt (22) is oriented with sides (33) in a substantially vertical plane so that the vehicle (21) can be coupled to one edge (38) of the belt and the other edge (39) used to guide the vertical position of the belt. Intermediate the edges (38, 39) drive assemblies (36, 37) can be periodically provided along the length of the transit path (23) to frictionally engage and drive the traction belt without interference from either the guiding surfaces (56, 57, 58) or the vehicle coupling assembly (51). A method of propelling a vehicle (21) and a traction member-based transit system is provided including a step of applying a traction force to the vehicle (21) through a traction belt (22) while the belt is vertically oriented.
205 | MULTIPLE TRACK RAIL SYSTEM | EP94912365.0 | 1994-03-30 | EP0743909A1 | 1996-11-27 | Carpenter, Jack, H. |
A multiple track rail transportation system provides cars (10) having a greater than standard width to span adjacent parallel tracks, and apparatus providing for such cars (10) to ride on standard wheel trucks (20) on each of the parallel tracks. Laterally spaced apart and coupled conventional engines may be used to pull such cars (10), and interconnection between the laterally spaced apart locomotives is provided to enable the train to be operated by a single crew in the cab of one locomotive. Alternatively, a single locomotive spanning the two adjacent parallel tracks may be used. Couplings are provided to enable conventional cars to be coupled to the wider cars (10) and/or engine as needed. The system provides gains in efficiency over relatively narrow trains limited by a single track, allowing shorter trains to still carry the same amount of cargo and/or passengers, and moreover allows wider loads to be carried without disassembly or transfer to smaller cars. Relatively wide river barges carrying bulk or other freight may be transported directly upon a flat car using the multiple track system.

Play systems of the present disclosure comprise a children's ride-on vehicle and a companion track. The companion vehicle and track each include a guide surface that is complementary to the companion apparatus and configured to guide the vehicle along a path of travel defined by the track. The children's ride-on vehicle may be powered, steerable, and configured to operate on and off the track. When the children's ride-on vehicle is guided and/or steered along the path of travel, the complementary guide surfaces do not substantially impede progress of the vehicle. When the children' s ride-on vehicle is guided and/or steered away from the path of travel, the complementary guide surfaces contact and/or frictionally engage to direct the vehicle along the path of travel and/or to slow progress of the vehicle. |
