81 Overhead power and free conveyor system US571493 1975-04-24 US3948186A 1976-04-06 Edward W. McCaul
An overhead power and free conveyor system in which a carrier is propelled along a portion of the carrier track of the system in the conventional manner by a pusher on a driven chain engaging a driving dog on the carrier. The carrier is propelled along another portion of the carrier track of this system by a self-propelled tractor, with provision for transferring a carrier from one of these forms of propulsion to another. Preferably, the tractor travels on the carrier track when propelling a carrier or a train of carriers, which may be directly coupled to the tractor. Alternately, the tractor travels on the carrier track and pulls a tow bar, supported by a separate track, and equipped with a pusher engageable with the carrier driving dog.
82 Power and free conveyor US44417474 1974-02-20 US3926125A 1975-12-16 ORWIN OLAF JOHN BARCLAY
A power and free conveyor wherein each load carrier comprises a plurality of trolleys, the foremost of which has dogs for engaging with driving dogs on the powered conveyor element. The rearmost trolley of each load carrier has control means operative when a following carrier comes into proximity with the rearmost trolley to disengage a driving dog of the following carrier from a driving dog of the powered conveyor element. The rearmost and next adjacent trolleys of each load carrier are connected with one another by a telescopic draft member which can pivot laterally relative to each trolley. The draft member contains a compression spring which absorbs a substantial part of the momentum of the following load carrier when the carriers come into proximity.

1,087,775. Wheeled vehicle conveyer apparatus. JERVIS B. WEBB CO. Nov. 30, 1965 [Dec. 10, 1964], No. 50667/65. Heading B7L. Wheeled vehicle conveyer apparatus for the final assembly of automotive vehicles, e.g. cars or trucks comprises a surface on which the vehicles can roll, and an overhead conveyer 18 driven by a unit 19, the conveyer 18 comprising carriers including a load bar 30 suspended by U-shaped brackets 33 from two load trolleys 31, 32 supported on a load track 24, a transverse beam 38 being pivotally secured to the load bar 30 and pivotally supporting the arms 42, 43 which each carry load engaging means 46 comprising rollers 51, 52 on which one or a pair of vehicle wheels are suspended so that the vehicle is towed across the surface on its unsuspended wheels by movement of the conveyer carrier. The conveyer carrier includes a leading trolley 26 linked by a bar 54 to the first load trolley 31 and having drive and holdback dogs 27, 28 engaged by pushers 23 carried by an endless chain 22 supported by trolleys 21 running on an I-beam 20. At a particular operation station, the carrier may be directly connected to the trolleys 21. The drive dog 27 is releasable by an arm 58 which is movable upwardly by a cam 60 on the rear trolley 62 which is linked by bars 63, 64 and a trolley 65 to the second load trolley 32, or the dog 27 may be disengaged at a wayside stop, e.g. 70. At the loading stop 70 the carrier is halted straddling a wheel raising platform 72 which is vertically movable with an approach ramp 73 by a fluid pressure cylinder 74, and on which the vehicle front wheels 76 may be positioned between the rollers 51, 52, and the platform then lowered. The vehicle chassis is assembled on a conventional endless conveyer 10, 12, Fig. 1 (not shown) and a body delivered by an overhead conveyer 14 is mounted on the chassis before the loading stop 70. A power and free conveyer 80 delivers front fenders and a hood in a section 81 side-by-side with the vehicle carrier. The conveyer tracks are bent through 180 degrees at 83 and vertically at 84, to bridge an aisleway for floor traffic (see Fig. 6). A roll test station is provided, Fig. 4 (not shown), the trolley (26) having its drive dog engaged by a stop (91). An unload station, Fig. 5 (not shown) comprises a vertically movable platform (97) and ramps (98), (99), and a stop (96) for halting the carrier. An optional equipment branch 93 having a separate drive unit 95 is provided. If the vehicle fails the roll test it is dispatched on to a branch 106 driven by a unit 114 by a switch 107, and then either on to a free branch 108 for heavy repair or on to a light repair area 110. The track 116 of the branch 106 extends through a spray booth and oven and back to the main conveyer at a switch 118.

A shock absorber trolley has a trolley frame including trolley wheels (7), a rearward cam, and a shock absorbing mechanism linked to the rearward cam. The trolley is especially adapted for use in a trolley assembly employed for bias banking of assembly (10) loads (13). The shock absorbing mechanism decelerates an adjacent trolley assembly during accumulation by absorbing impact energy when the leading trolley (1) of the adjacent trolley assembly strikes the rearward cam of the shock absorber trolley. When employed as an intermediate trolley (3) in a trolley assembly, the absorption of energy minimizes both noise generation and swaying of the assembly load during the biased banking of loads.
