105 SEAT BELT SENSING FOR VEHICLE OCCUPANT LOAD AND MISUSE PCT/US2004019192 2004-06-14 WO2005018990A3 2005-05-06 O'NEILL JOHN
A vehicle safety system uses sensors mounted between a seat belt frame (20) and a seat belt spool (24) to detect protraction of seat belt webbing after the seat belt spool (24) has been locked by an inertial switch or the like. A vehicle safety system controller (36) gathers information from vehicle mounted crash sensors. If the vehicle safety system controller (36) determines that a crash is taking place, but does not receive an output from the sensor mounted between the seat belt frame and the seat belt spool indicating seat belt webbing is being protracted, the vehicle safety system controller (36) deploys other safety devices (38) based on the assumption that the occupant of a particular seat is not properly restrained by one or more seat belts. For example seat belt use information can be used to vary the level of airbag deployment in a variable deployment airbag. An alternative embodiment detects motion of a linear energy-absorbing mechanism.
106 RESTRAINT SYSTEM IN VEHICLES, TRAINS AND AIRCRAFT FOR INCREASING PASSENGER SAFETY PCT/DE9803270 1998-11-10 WO9924294A3 1999-07-22 GO GIOK DJIEN
In spite of the constant improvement of common prior art restraint systems, the number of serious/fatal injuries due to yaw acceleration, forward acceleration, submarining and overstress as in problem cases G1 to G5 has recently increased. The invention offers a much more useful and safe protection of infants, children or adults in any real accident of a vehicle, train or aircraft, or during aircraft instability due to turbulences. Both diagonal belts (1.1, 1.2) cross after the lock tongue (2) is manually or mechanically inserted into the belt lock (4) and the lock tongue (9) is locked into the belt lock (9.1), forming an X-shaped restraint system of upper torso (95) and restraint system of lower torso (96). Both parts of the lap belt (1.3R, 1.3L) cross after the lock tongue (11) is inserted into the belt lock (8) for retaining both thighs. The seat (3) and an integral safety belt (1) are integrated in a single unit. For greater ease of operation and faster passenger rescue, pressing a general release button (84) of the belt lock (9.1) releases all lock tongues from all belt locks.

A webbing take-up device is obtained in which the number of rotations of a spool from the start of deformation of a first energy absorption member until the start of deformation of a second energy absorption member can exceed one rotation. In a webbing take-up device, a restricting tab is provided at an open side of the engagement recess portion. Although the leading end of the stopper pawl and the engagement recess portion face each other in the first rotation of the lock ring, a leading end of a stopper pawl is thereby unable to enter inside the engagement recess portion. The restricting tab is restricted from rotating when the leading end of the stopper pawl abuts an abutting portion of the restricting tab. When the lock ring accordingly rotates in a pull-out direction, the restricting tab moves relative to the open side of the engagement recess portion. When the leading end of the stopper pawl and the engagement recess portion face each other in this state, the leading end of the stopper pawl is thereby able to enter the engagement recess portion.

A seat belt assembly for a vehicle includes a pretensioner, and a cable connected to the pretensioner. The seat belt assembly includes a torsion bar having a plurality of teeth. The cable has slots interlocking with the teeth. During a sensed impact of the vehicle, the pretensioner is activated to retract the cable to pretension the seat belt assembly relative to an occupant of the vehicle. The interlocking of the slots with the teeth exerts torsional forces on the torsion bar, which yields to reduce forces on a chest of the occupant.
