In the present invention, it has been discovered that Scanning Tunneling Microscopy is a useful tool for imaging a surface on a nanometer scale and/or fabricating on a nano-sized scale by transferring a particle (e.g., protein) from one location to another. This is accomplished by a method of transferring a material from a first location to a second location comprising the steps of providing a stylus, applying a bias to the stylus, providing a surface, and changing the bias of the stylus such that the material is transferred from the first location to the second location.

A system and method for manipulating and processing nanowires in solution with arrays of holographic optical traps. The system and method of the present invention is capable of creating hundreds of individually controlled optical traps with the ability to manipulate objects in three dimensions. Individual nanowires with cross-sections as small as 20 nm and lengths exceeding 20 μm are capable of being isolated, translated, rotated and deposited onto a substrate with holographic optical trap arrays under conditions where single traps have no discernible influence. Spatially localized photothermal and photochemical processes induced by the well-focused traps can also be used to melt localized domains on individual nanowires and to fuse nanowire junctions.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for growing the matrixes of carbon nanotubes. SOLUTION: The method for growing the matrixes of carbon nanotubes comprises: a stage where a base material having a mask is prepared; a stage where a catalyst sputtering system is installed in the upper part of the base material so as to shield a part of the mask, and catalysts jumped out from the catalyst sputtering system are deposited on the base material, and a trapezoid catalyst membrane is formed; a stage where the mask is removed, and the best growing region of the catalyst membrane is measured; a stage where the base material formed with the catalyst membrane is annealed; and a stage where carbon-containing gas is introduced, and the matrixes of the carbon nanotubes are grown into the above catalyst membrane in such a manner that they are separated from the best growing region and are curved to different directions. By this invention, the production process is simplified, and the constitution of the matrixes of the carbon nanotubes can be utilized for a field emitter, an electronic vacuum device or the like.
