Arrays of spin-valve elements that can be selectively activated to trap, hold, manipulate and release magnetically tagged biological and chemical particles, including molecules and polymers. The spin-valve elements that can be selectively activated and deactivated by applying a momentary applied magnetic field thereto. The spin valve element array can be used for selectively sorting and transporting magnetic particles one particle at a time within the array. As the magnetically tagged particles are held by the spin-valve elements, application of an auxiliary magnetic field can be used to apply tension or torsion to the held particles or to move, e.g. rotate, the trapped particles. The arrays of spin-valve elements can be used in a variety of applications including drug screening, nucleic acid sequencing, structural control and analysis of RNA/DNA and protiens, medical diagnosis, and magnetic particle susceptibility and size homogenization for other medical applications.

Methods and apparatus for the preparation and use of a substrate having an array of diverse materials in predefined regions thereon. A substrate having an array of diverse materials thereon is generally prepared by delivering components of materials to predefined regions on a substrate, and simultaneously reacting the components to form at least two materials or, alternatively, allowing the components to interact to form at least two different materials. Materials which can be prepared using the methods and apparatus of the present invention include, for example, covalent network solids, ionic solids and molecular solids. More particularly, materials which can be prepared using the methods and apparatus of the present invention include, for example, inorganic materials, intermetallic materials, metal alloys, ceramic materials, organic materials, organometallic materials, nonbiological organic polymers, composite materials (e.g., inorganic composites, organic composites, or combinations thereof), etc. Once prepared, these materials can be screened for useful properties including, for example, electrical, thermal, mechanical, morphological, optical, magnetic, chemical, or other properties. Thus, the present invention provides methods for the parallel synthesis and analysis of novel materials having useful properties.

119 | Thermo-reversibly gelled colloidal suspensions and a process for making the same | US12386335 | 2009-04-16 | US20090318309A1 | 2009-12-24 | Kyle William Kimble; Jeremy Paul Walker; Sanlord Abraham Asher |
Disclosed is a thermoreversible synthesis of a new type of material made by embedding a colloidal population within a thermo-reversibly gelled polymer. The polymer may be a physically cross-linked PVA hydrogel. PVA hydrogels are non-toxic, biocompatible, mechanically robust, and elastic. The present invention TGCCA diffraction is similar to that of photo-polymerized PCCA. The present invention TGCCA can be irreversibly covalently cross-linked using glutaraldehyde. The cross-linked TGCCA can be made responsive to chemical stimuli by functionalizing the hydrogel hydroxyl groups. The diffraction of carboxyl or amine functionalized TGCCA was monitored as a function of the pH and determined diffraction wavelengths titrate with the pKa of the functional group. It was also demonstrated that TGCCA could be fabricated in arbitrarily large volumes and shapes. The present invention method fabricates inexpensive homogenously diffracting chemically modifiable TGCCA.
120 | METHOD OF PREPARING A SUBSTRATE WITH A COMPOSITION INCLUDING AN ORGANOBORANE INITIATOR | US12258139 | 2008-10-24 | US20090111701A1 | 2009-04-30 | Dongchan Ahn; Kevin Wier |
A method of preparing a substrate with a composition comprising (i) an organoborane initiator and (ii) a radical curable component disposed thereon includes the step of depositing the composition onto the substrate wherein at least one of (i) the organoborane initiator and (ii) the radical curable component is deposited onto the substrate in the form of a gradient pattern. An article comprises the substrate and the gradient pattern formed on the substrate. The gradient pattern is formed from a developed composition comprising the reaction product of (i) the organoborane initiator and (ii) the radical curable component. By forming the gradient pattern on the substrate, combinatorial and high-throughput methods of generating and testing the developed composition are possible, which enable characterization of the developed composition for various physical and chemical properties. |
