An ergonomic hand wheel for use on a hand brake system on a railway car in which a hand wheel includes a planetary gear system to provides a mechanical advantage to significantly reduce the effort and force required to turn the hand wheel. The planetary gear system includes a sun gear rigidly interconnected to the hand wheel and a hub member rotatably interconnected to the hand wheel which is independently rotatable relative to the hand wheel. The hub member further including a socket at the axis for attaching the hub member to a rotatable drive member of a hand brake system on a railway car, as well as a plurality of planetary gears rotatably secured thereto to mesh with and engage the sun gear. A fixed ring gear attached to a structural element independent of the hand wheel and the hub member, encircles, meshes with and engages the planetary gears.

Mit der vorliegenden Erfindung wird eine Vorrichtung in einem Gehäuse (1) zum sicheren Be- bzw. Entlüften einer Steuerleitung für Druckluftbremsen in Schienenfahrzeugen vorgestellt. In dem Gehäuse (1) ist die gesamte erfindungsgemäße Mechanik des Notbremszugkastens untergebracht und zusätzlich zu der Mechanik befindet sich ein elektrischer Schalter (6) und ein Steuerventil (3) in diesem Kasten. Der erfindungsgemäße Notbremskasten zeichnet sich durch seinen einfachen Aufbau und seine Funktionssicherheit aus, die unter anderem darin zu sehen ist, daß unbefugte Personen die einmal betätigte Vorrichtung nicht mehr manipulieren können. Die Rückstellung des Mechanismus in seine Ursprungslage, d. h. in die Stellung zu bringen, in der das Steuerventil (3) geschlossen ist, ist nur mittels eines geeigneten Schaffnerschlüssels möglich.

Mit der vorliegenden Erfindung wird eine Vorrichtung in einem Gehäuse (1) zum sicheren Be- bzw. Entlüften einer Steuerleitung für Druckluftbremsen in Schienenfahrzeugen vorgestellt. In dem Gehäuse (1) ist die gesamte erfindungsgemäße Mechanik des Notbremszugkastens untergebracht und zusätzlich zu der Mechanik befindet sich ein elektrischer Schalter (6) und ein Steuerventil (3) in diesem Kasten. Der erfindungsgemäße Notbremskasten zeichnet sich durch seinen einfachen Aufbau und seine Funktionssicherheit aus, die unter anderem darin zu sehen ist, daß unbefugte Personen die einmal betätigte Vorrichtung nicht mehr manipulieren können. Die Rückstellung des Mechanismus in seine Ursprungslage, d. h. in die Stellung zu bringen, in der das Steuerventil (3) geschlossen ist, ist nur mittels eines geeigneten Schaffnerschlüssels möglich.

A parking brake for a railway vehicle includes a pneumatic cylinder having a cylinder wall, a first wall opposite a second wall, and a piston movable within the pneumatic cylinder. At least one spring extends between the piston and the second wall for biasing the piston against the first wall. A gear box is fixed relative to the second wall and includes a hand wheel. A spindle is operatively connected to the gear box to affect movement of a manual reset mechanism having a threaded shaft and a ball screw nut rotatably engaged with the threaded shaft. A pushrod is connected to the manual reset mechanism and extends through the cylinder and the first wall. When the hand wheel is rotated, the manual reset mechanism is rotated to cause the pushrod to move relative to the piston corresponding to the direction of the rotation of the hand wheel.

The invention provides a brake release device for a braking arrangement. The braking arrangement includes friction pads, a friction surface and a first fluid path to convey fluid for controlling the application of the friction pads against the friction surface. The brake release device comprises a second fluid path to convey fluid for releasing the friction pads from the friction surface. The brake release device also comprises a selector valve coupled with the first and second fluid paths. The selector valve is capable to selectively acquire a first mode, a second mode and an intermediate mode. The first mode establishes fluid communication between the first fluid path and the braking arrangement. The second mode establishes fluid communication between the second fluid path and the braking arrangement. The selector valve is movable from the first mode to the second mode via the intermediate mode in which pressurized fluid in the first fluid path is relieved before entering the second mode. The brake release device may also comprise a pressure responsive interlock which controls switching between the first mode and the second mode when pressure in the second fluid path is above a threshold.

Disclosed is a hand brake mechanism for a rail vehicle. The hand brake is operated by rotation of one of a pair of hand wheels (70,75). Rotation of the hand wheel causes rotation of a screw (62) within brake actuator (60), which in turn moves a nut (66) in a linear manner. Movement of the nut causes a pair of cables (40 and 50) to operate two wheel brake mechanisms (30), one on each wheel of an axle (20). Cable (50) is operated by pushing or pulling its inner part (54) whereas cable (40) is operated by pushing or pulling its outer sheath (42) while its inner part (44) is held at the actuator (60). This action causes a corresponding pushing or pulling at the cable's brake mechanism end.

The piston assembly includes a piston rod which is associated with the force transfer lever (14,16) of the braking system such that upon a removal of pneumatic pressure within the casing, longitudinal movement of the piston rod causes this force transfer lever to rotate and apply a force to at least one force transmitting member in the vehicle braking system to initiate a brake application. An arrangement or system for installing the spring applied parking brake assembly within a railway vehicle braking system is also provided.

An electrically controlled actuation valve (42) may be positioned intermediate the source of fluid pressure (14) and the force regulating valve (18) to enable electrical actuation of fluid communication from the source of fluid pressure to the force regulating valve. Additionally, a pneumatic release valve (38) and/or an electrically controlled release valve (48) may be provided to communicate fluid pressure from a source of fluid pressure (14) to a release cylinder (40) in order to release the brakes of the hand brake assembly (11).
