61 Spring-applied parking brake assembly having manual quick release mechanism JP2001049153 2001-02-23 JP2001270433A 2001-10-02 ZEMYAN JAMES M; LEWIS ROGER V
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spring-applied parking brake assembly for a train brake system, for automatically applying a parking brake when there is no air supply. SOLUTION: The spring-applied parking brake assembly 60 includes a cylindrical easing 70, inside which a longitudinally movable piston assembly 72 is contained. The piston assembly is connected to the force distribution lever of the brake system to apply a force to the force distribution lever during longitudinal movement. At least one spring member 78 is provided in the cylindrical casing. Since the spring member applies a certain force to the piston assembly, when pneumatic pressure to the brake system is eliminated, the piston assembly automatically moves longitudinally whereby the piston assembly recedes inside the casing and the force distribution lever rotates in the direction to start applying the brake. Hence, the brake of the vehicle is automatically applied when the vehicle is removed from a train and an air supply part for the pneumatic brake system is separated.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device engageable with a hand brake assembly and automatically actuating and applying the brake of a railroad vehicle. SOLUTION: The automatic hand brake device engageble with the hand brake assembly 20 and adapted for automatically applying at least one brake device fixed to the railroad vehicle having such a hand brake assembly 20 includes actuation means 30, at least a portion of which engages at least one of the gears of a gear assembly 40 disposed in the housing member 16 of the hand brake assembly 20, for actuating the gear assembly 40 in the direction to apply the brake device. To periodically supply a predetermined pressure to the actuation means 30 in order to apply the brae device, a source 50 of fluid pressure is connected to the actuation means 30. Means 60 are connected to the source 50 of fluid pressure for automatically applying the brake device by triggering the supply of the predetermined pressure to the actuation means 30.

PURPOSE: To improve durability by disposing a disc brake in a wheel center surface upper range of a fork arm provided at a front/rear and right/left end part of a carriage frame, and introducing braking reaction force generated in a vertical direction through a stopper provided on each arm to the carriage frame. CONSTITUTION: An under carriage for a track vehicle comprises a frame 2 including a fork arm 2a provided at a front/rear and right/left end part, and a bearing 2b to support an axle 1a of each wheel 1 is provided on each arm 2a. A wheel disc brake is disposed on the arm 2a. The wheel disc brake is mainly composed of a brake cylinder 3, a brake fork 4 comprising a fixed point lever, a cylinder lever, and a brake lever coupling piece, and a brake piece 5. In this case, the brake is disposed at a center surface upper position of the wheel 1, so all the braking reaction force generated in a vertical direction is introduced through a stopper piece 2c installed on the arm 21a to cooperate with the braking piece 5 to the carriage frame 2. A handbrake for a railroad car includes a handbrake body having one or more gear train components therein and a drive shaft operatively connected to the one or more gear train components. An intermediate pinion shaft is operatively connected to the drive shaft through one or more gears. A shaft alignment link is adapted for maintaining a relative spacing between the drive shaft and the intermediate pinion shaft during rotation of the drive shaft. A gear box housing is provided to enclose at least a portion of the drive shaft, the intermediate pinion shaft, and the shaft alignment link. The shaft alignment link is movable relative to the gear box housing due to any eccentric movement of the drive shaft to maintain the proper spacing between the drive shaft and the intermediate pinion shaft, thereby eliminating a possibility of gear binding. A method for aligning internal gear components within a handbrake and an alignment system for use with a railway vehicle handbrake is also provided.

The invention relates to a device for covering an actuating element (103). The device has a pane (114) for covering said actuating element (103), and a frame (110) for receiving the pane (114), said frame having an inner opening and a guideway for guiding a movement of the pane from a covering position into an access position. In the covering position, the pane (114) closes the inner opening. In the access position, the pane (114) at least partially exposes the inner opening to allow an operator to have access to the actuating element through the inner opening. In addition, the device has a retainer element which is designed to hold the pane (114) in the covering position when a force acting on the retainer element via the pane (114) is smaller than a release force. Furthermore, the retainer element is designed to allow the pane (114) to move into the access position when a force acting on the retainer element via the pane is greater than the release force.

A spring applied parking brake assembly (10) for a railroad vehicle braking system is provided for an automatic application of the parking brake in the absence of an air source. The spring applied parking brake assembly (10) comprises a cylindrical casing containing a piston assembly. The piston assembly is mounted for longitudinal movement within the casing upon the application and/or removal of pneumatic pressure to the piston assembly. The piston assembly is associated with a force transfer lever (14,16) of the braking system so as to apply a force to this force transfer lever upon longitudinal movement of the piston assembly. At least one spring member is provided within the cylindrical casing. This spring member applies a constant force to the piston assembly such that longitudinal movement of the piston assembly automatically occurs upon removal of pneumatic pressure to the braking system, causing the piston assembly to retract within the casing and the force transfer lever (14,16) to rotate in a direction to initiate a brake application. Thus, once the train is removed from the train consist and the air supply for the pneumatic braking system has been disconnected, the brakes of the train are automatically applied. A manual quick release system is also provided which allows the parking brake to be released during shunting operations or anytime that it is desirable to move the vehicle in the absence of air.

A spring applied parking brake assembly for a railway vehicle is provided which automatically activates upon removal of a railway car from the pneumatic braking system of the railway vehicle. The spring applied parking brake assembly comprises a casing which is mounted on or within the braking system, typically alongside the air cylinder. This casing contains a spring member and a piston assembly, both of which are mounted for longitudinal movement within the casing upon the application and/or removal of pneumatic pressure within the casing. The piston assembly includes a piston rod which is associated with the force transfer lever of the braking system such that upon a removal of pneumatic pressure within the casing, longitudinal movement of the piston rod causes this force transfer lever to rotate and apply a force to at least one force transmitting member in the vehicle braking system to initiate a brake application. An arrangement or system for installing the spring applied parking brake assembly within a railway vehicle braking system is also provided.
