<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a copper-based sintered sliding material capable of providing a sintered layer having a good run-in characteristic and foreign matter burying characteristic and enhancing the anti-buckling performance by heightening the strength of a steel backing strip. <P>SOLUTION: The copper-based sintered sliding material is manufactured by scattering a powder of Cu or Cu alloy on a steel plate, followed by a primary sintering process, a primary rolling process with pressure, and secondary sintering process, and then a secondary rolling process at a pressure drop rate of 10%, and finally a heating process at a temperature over the Cu/Cu alloy recrystallization starting temperature but under the recrystallization starting temperature of the steel backing strip. The steel backing strip of this sliding material manufactured in the described manner shows a hardness-Hv of 160 or more and an elongation of 10% or more while the sintered layer has a hardness-Hv of 130 or less and a particle size in crystal of 45 μm or less, and thereby the sintered layer has a good run-in characteristic and good foreign matter burying characteristic along with a high strength, and also the steel backing strip has a high yielding point, and even if it is used in a bearing and fixed to a housing with a tight fitting margin, buckling will never occur or a decrease in the circumferential length due to crystal strain relief in the restorage phenomenon will never arise. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
