836,061. Change-speed control. BROWN INDUSTRIES Ltd., D. July 2, 1958 [July 4, 1957], No. 21134/57. Class 80 (2). To facilitate engagement of intermediate ratios in a gear-box providing seven speeds and reverse, a manual gear-shift lever 11 is guided by a fixed gate 10 having a central slot with four pairs of aligned speed slots spaced along it, and a baulking plate 12 is slidable in guides 13 of the gate and is provided with an opening indicated by hatching in the drawing. In the position of plate 12 shown, lever 11 can move along the central slot only as far as the 2nd and 3rd speed slots. Movement of lever 11 to the 2nd gear position leaves the position of plate 12 unaltered, but on movement into the 3rd gear position the lever contacts the plate and moves it to the right to a position in which the lever can be moved along the central slot only into alignment with the 4th and 5th speed slots. Movement of the lever into the 5th speed slot moves the plate to the left and enables the highest gears to be engaged.

A power unit includes: a rotation plate 62 that is fixed to an end of a shift drum 50, includes a plurality of recessed portions 63, and rotates together with the shift drum 50; a shift lever 66 that engages with the rotation plate 62; a shift shaft 74 fixed to the shift lever 66; a support shaft 76 disposed substantially in parallel with the shift drum 50; a stopper lever 78 rotatably supported by the support shaft 76; and a stopper roller 88 that is provided in the stopper lever 78 and engages with the recessed portion 63 of the rotation plate 62. When viewed in an axial direction of the shift shaft 74, the stopper lever 78 is disposed to intersect a first line segment A that connects a center 74C of the shift shaft 74 and a center 62C of the rotation plate 62 to each other.
70 Multi-functional apparatus employing an electro-magnetic device and an intermittent motion mechanism US986856 1997-12-08 US6116110A 2000-09-12 H. Winston Maue; Eric J. Krupp
A multi-functional apparatus employs an electromagnetic device. The electromagnetic device selectively causes movement of an intermittent motion mechanism thereby moving a mechanical device coupled thereto. In another aspect of the present invention, a single electric motor selectively actuates three intermittent motion mechanisms thereby causing three mechanical devices coupled thereto to operate. In a further aspect of the present invention, a clutch mechanism selectively drives a window wiper. A method for operating the multi-functional apparatus of the present invention is also provided.
71 Multi-functional apparatus employing an electromagnetic device US948168 1997-10-09 US5916327A 1999-06-29 H. Winston Maue; Eric J. Krupp
A multi-functional apparatus employs an electromagnetic device. The electromagnetic device selectively causes movement of an intermittent motion mechanism thereby moving a mechanical device coupled thereto. A main driving gear is rotated from the wiper positional range in either direction to access one or another adjacent release positional range, but not necessarily both at the same time.
72 Dual mode shifter for automatic transmissions US189430 1980-09-22 US4370897A 1983-02-01 Louis D. Carlo
A shifter having a true ratchet mode for operating between the drive gears, and a gate mode for use in park and reverse. The invention provides a floating pawl at the ends of two links in a three member, four pivot point linkage. This linkage provides the advantages that the operating handle is always engaged and yet permits easy change-over from one mode to the other.
73 Shift mechanism for automatic transmission US484708 1974-07-01 US3941008A 1976-03-02 Emanuel F. Cambria
An in-line shift mechanism for an automotive automatic transmission having the dual capability of permitting selective shifting directly into any one of plural drive positions, a neutral position, a reverse position or a park position, and also of only sequential shifting through the three drive positions in either direction while requiring momentary release of the shifting lever between adjacent drive positions. The shift lever is pivotally mounted for forward and rearward movement as well as perpendicular (usually generally vertical) movement relative to the pivot axis of the lever. A cam surface is provided on the mounting bracket for engagement with a pin carried by the shift lever to require vertical displacement of the shift lever to move from park position into reverse position and another vertical displacement to move from reverse position to any of the three drive positions or neutral. A pawl and detent plate are mounted respectively on the shift lever and the mounting bracket to require successive shifting through the three drive positions while the shift lever is in its lowermost vertical position.

A manipulation lever can be manipulated to select a first mode for automatically changing the drive range of an automatic transmission or a second mode for changing the drive range by manually manipulating the manipulation lever. The manipulation lever is shifted between the first mode in which a control lever moves mechanically with the manipulation lever and the second mode in which the control lever does not move with the manipulation lever. A first guide portion guides the manipulation lever and a second guide portion guides the clutch lever. When the manipulation lever is arranged at the drive position, the first and second guide portions permit the manipulation lever to be disengaged from the clutch lever. When the manipulation lever is arranged at positions other than the drive position, the first and second guide portions keep the manipulation lever to be engaged with the clutch lever.
