A foam mattress in which a layer of latex or latex-like foam placed above a layer of memory foam is described. This construction of the mattress provides the contouring pressure relief that a visco-elastic foam provides with a top surface with quick recovery (a latex-like “bounce”) that prevents people from getting “stuck” in the visco-elastic foam and improves the springiness of the mattress. The mattress may also include straps and cinches to aid in transportation of the mattress. The mattress may also include removable covers that aid in keeping the mattress clean.

An emergency evacuation harness, such as is used for evacuating immobile patients, or similar persons, comprises longitudinal straps (14, 15) and transverse straps (11, 12) forming a grid-like structure of longitudinal and transverse loops. Attachment means (17, 18) are provided at each side of each transverse loop. Further longitudinal straps (20) extend from one end, having fastening means (21, 22, 24, 25) which are aligned with and connect to the attachment means (17, 18) when the further longitudinal straps (20) are pulled over the transverse loops to hold the patient in position. The further longitudinal straps (20) extend to form a handle loop (27). Lateral loop belts (21, 24) extending between the fastening means (22, 25) have releasable tightening means (23, 26).

A multi-needle quilting machine (20) is provided with a tape or ribbon guide (30) that is operated by a method by which a narrow strip (32) is fed against a facing layer of a wide multi-layered material (24) as it is fed into the quilting machine. In the quilting machine, series of chain stitches are sewn, at least one of which joins the tape (32) and layers of the multi-layered material (24) together with the same thread in a quilting process, thereby applying the tape (32) to the quilted product in a single quilting operation without the need for a post-quilting tape application step. The tape may form a decorative strip or have unsewn sections that serve as handles for a mattress when the quilted product is formed into a mattress cover. The quilting machine, the tape application attachment, the quilting method, the quilted panels, and mattresses having the quilted panels are claimed.
