A mattress sling is provided for the lifting, moving and transporting of the common bedroom mattress and box spring systems. By providing the mattress sling, the typical method of bending down to the floor, gripping the bottom of the mattress firmly with one hand, and holding one vertical end of the mattress firmly with the other hand before lifting and moving, is eliminated. By providing the mattress sling, lifting straps on the ends of the sling are located within easier reach of one's grasp effecting a better posture for the carrier persons. By providing the mattress sling, an improvement is made on the current lifting, moving and transporting of bedroom mattress and box spring systems, as implied by mattress manufacturers. |

A mattress comprises a support plate having a plurality of mounting holes, a plurality of independent spring assemblies individually mounted to the support plate, and a cover enclosing the support plate and the plurality of spring assemblies. Each of the spring assemblies includes a tubular mounting member fixed to the support plate preferably by snap-fit through a mounting hole in the support plate, a sliding cap axially movable relative to the mounting member, and a spring acting between the mounting member and the sliding cap, wherein the spring is axially compressible when the sliding cap is forced in an axial direction toward the support plate. A spacer of chosen length can be provided to set preload on the spring. In a “flippable” embodiment, the mounting member includes a mid-portion snap-fitted to the support plate and upper and lower portions each having a sliding cap associated therewith, wherein the spring acts between the two sliding caps. In yet another embodiment, the sliding cap is replaced by a bellows attached to the mounting member. |

A handle for a mattress border is anchored with spaced grommets in the border against which anchors on the handle ends may bear. The anchors are designed to allow a leading end of the handle to be drawn through grommet opening. A back strap between the grommet openings is shaped to allow clamping to move the grommet opening to aligned position. To allow the drawing of the anchors through the grommet opening, at least one of the anchors is provided with first couplings. A puller rod is designed to be inserted through at least one of the grommet openings. The puller rod is provided with second couplings, designed to cooperate with the first couplings to achieve the pulling function. In one variant the clamping device may be used to bend the back bar and border into ‘U’ shape, with the inside of the border on the convex side of the U, so that a straight puller rod may pull the leading anchor through the aligned grommet openings in the sequence inside to outside to inside relative to the border material. |

A cover for a mattress usable when the mattress is moved. The cover covers the periphery and flap portions cover a portion of both sides of the mattress. A plurality of peripherally spaced handle straps are riveted to the peripheral portion and the flap portions of the cover and are graspable to move the mattress. In one embodiment, a loop is formed on the inner end of each strap and an elastic cord passes through the loops and its ends secured together to hold the cover on the mattress. In a second embodiment, the cord passes through a hem formed in the inner end of the flap and there are no loops on the straps. |

A handle for a mattress border is anchored with spaced grommets in the border against which anchors on the handle ends may bear. The anchors are designed to allow a leading end of the handle to be drawn through a grommet opening. A back strap between the grommet openings is shaped to allow clamping to move the grommet openings to aligned position. To allow the drawing of the anchors through the grommet openings, at least one of the anchors is provided with first coupling means. A puller rod is designed to be inserted through at least one of the grommet openings. The puller rod is provided with second coupling means, designed to cooperate with the first coupling means to achieve the pulling function. In one variant the clamping means may be used to bend the back bar and border into a `U` shape, with the inside of the border on the convex side of the U, so that a straight puller rod may pull the leading anchor through the aligned grommet openings in the sequence inside to outside to inside relative to the border material. In a second variant the clamping means act so that the `U` shape becomes more like a `V` so that the grommet axes may be considered to be on a common arc. A curved puller rod, with a second coupling means on its free end is moved to pass through both grommets in an anti-pulling direction to couple the first (handle) coupling means to pull its leading end through the two grommets. In a third variant using two puller rods the handle is first shaped in a downward arc over a flattened border with the back strap at the bottom. The free end of a puller rod projects through each grommet opening. The border and back strap are then bent into a V the rods travelling to maintain their position relative to the grommet opening. This achieves coupling of each pair of first and second coupling means. The puller rods may then be retracted to pull the handle ends through the grommets. |

A carrying device including an elongate flexible cord folded to define two cord lengths with a rigid tubular handle slidably mounted at the bight portion of the cord lengths. The cord lengths are alternately engaged through opposed ends of the intermediately rigid tubular supports, crossing within each support, and extending beyond the supports through the opposed ends of a second handle. The supports and second handle slidably adjust along the carrying device with the length of the carrying device fixed by a knot between the end portions of the lines beyond the second handle. |

An improved mattress carrier for containing and protectably enclosing a mattress and for facilitating handling of the mattress during transportation to a location of use. The carrier comprises a flexible, generally rectangular cover designed to receive and contain a mattress therein. The cover has an upper zippered opening, sets of reinforcing straps bands and spaced pairs of handles on opposite ends of the cover to be gripped by respective deliverymen to normally support the mattress in a generally vertical plane. The handles which may be formed by flexible looped ends of the reinforcing bands are spaced along the ends of the cover on opposite sides of a midline of the mattress carrier, such that the mattress and carrier may be easily manipulated and reoriented about the midline in confined spaces to facilitate handling of the same. |

An improved self-releasing locking unit, such as a self-releasing locking edge support, in an inner spring assembly wherein the locking unit can be employed to secure the inner spring assembly in a compressed condition during the covering of same, and which will release the inner spring assembly from the compressed condition after the covering procedure has been completed. The self-releasing locking unit comprises a hook connected to the peripheral lower frame of the inner spring assembly and a hook receiver connected to an upper portion of the inner spring assembly. The hook is biased in a first position near the lower frame and is movable to a second position wherein the hook is disposed substantially normal to the plane of the lower frame and is adapted to engage the hook when the lower and upper frames of the inner spring assembly are in a compressed condition. The hook receiver releases the hook when the lower and upper frames are further compressed so that the hook can return to the first position and the lower and upper frames of the inner spring assembly can expand. |
