A process for the production of a manufactured article for coatings, for components of sanitary ware, kitchen fitings, etc., in p olymerized transparent resin in which marble and other stones are embedded. The surface of the product is worked by brushing with abrasives, so as to obtain depressions corresponding to the resin, and slight projections with substantially uniform distribution corresponding to the inserts; advantageously, the inserts are 'decapitated' to give smoothed surfaces.

A polymer comprising an anionic group (e.g. an acid anhydride group, a carboxyl group) and a hydrophilic segment (e.g. a polyoxyalkylene ether unit) is used as a cement retarder. The polymer is obtainable by copolymerization of a monomer including maleic anhydride with a monomer including a vinylalkyl ether-series monomer in which an alkylene oxide is added to allyl alcohol. The polymer may be a copolymer copolymerized with other monomers such as styrene. Use of this cement retarder can provide patterns or washing-finished face on the surface of a concrete product. The cement retarder is suitable for application for a cement retardative sheet.

The invention provides an artificial stone of the following composition, having a deep color tone and gloss, and a highly dense and uniform structure.

An inorganic fine particle component having a size of 10 to 70 mesh is used wherein the sum of the inorganic fine particle component and an inorganic microparticle component having a size of 100 mesh or smaller accounts for at least 85 wt.% of the entire product, and a resin component accounts for up to 15 wt.%. All or part of the fine particle component is surface-coated and hardened in advance by an inorganic or organic substance. The artificial stone of the invention has a uniform composition of the individual components, and fine particles are exposed on the surface by polishing.

A cement setting retarder comprising a polyester produced by the reaction of a polycarboxylic acid component containing a polycarboxylic acid having a main chain bearing 2 to 6 carbon atoms (e.g. maleic anhydride) with a polyol component containing a polyhydric alcohol bearing 2 to 4 carbon atoms or a condensate thereof. The unsaturated polyester is usable also as a polymerizable composition containing a polymerization initiator, a polymerizable vinyl monomer, and other components. The setting retarder may comprise particles of a cured unsaturated polyester. A setting retarder sheet can be formed by coating or impregnating a base sheet with a composition containing the retarder and a pressure-sensitive adhesive. It is possible to form patterns on the surface of a concrete product or to conduct exposed-aggregate finish thereon by forming given patterns in the form by using the retarder or sheet, placing a mortar composition thereon, and washing the surface of a set concrete to thereby expose an unset mortar.
