A traction device for vehicle wheels has tread segments that are expandable and contractible by secondary inflatable chambers to place studs either in engagement or out of engagement with a road surface. Alternatively, stud bearing tread segments are removably mounted between segments of conventional tread.
84 Ezekiel's Wheel US636539 1996-04-25 US5690375A 1997-11-25 John Robert Schneider
A railroad right of way is constructed of rails which have a top surface upon which the railroad car's wheels ride that undulates up and down. The plurality of wheels along the length of the rail car only bear the weight of the rail car when they happen to be the wheels that are momentarily positioned above the descending portions of the undulating track. A mechanical device attached separately to each wheel are employed to alternatively raise some of the wheels while simultaneously lowering others depending on each wheel's position over the undulations in the track at any one time. Undulations can change in frequency and height and position to those undulations in parallel rails forming the same right of way. Monorail right of ways are also practical using this undulating rail design concept. One type of mechanical devices of presenting a plurality of wheels to the undulating rails is a large wheel which displays a multiple number of independently operating, smaller wheels around its circumference which smaller wheels contact the surface separately in sequence as the large wheel turns.
85 Variable shaped wheel US230222 1994-04-20 US5492390A 1996-02-20 Franz J. Kugelmann, Sr.
A variable shaped wheel having a hub, a plurality of extendable ram rods connecting the hub and shape adaptable rim. Extension and retraction of the ram rods cause the rim to harmonize to a selected wheel shape such as horizontal oval, vertical oval, elliptical, tractor like and numerous other shapes, when stationary and while moving. The selected shape of the variable wheel in motion is maintained by continual length adjustment of the ram rods. The variable shaped wheel adjusts to the most effective, efficient shape for travel over varying surfaces such as asphalt, concrete, sand, mud, rock, snow, ice and others, providing optimum speed and comfort. It is another purpose of the present invention, through change in shape of the variable wheel, pulley, gear from conventional circular to oval, elliptical, and shapes other than circular, to make contact at the periphery along the elongated axis with another wheel, pulley, gear, providing for simple and effective rotational energy transmission from one wheel, pulley, gear, to another.
86 Expandable wheel assembly US315718 1994-09-30 US5487692A 1996-01-30 Kevin B. Mowrer; Robert L. Beck
An expandable wheel assemble for toy vehicles includes an axle, a first hub fixed to the axle, a second hub supported by the axle, and at least one web that spans between and is joined to the hubs, and has a central portion movable outwardly from the axle due to centrifugal force when the wheel assembly is rotated.
87 Portable collapsible wheels US622668 1984-06-20 US4602823A 1986-07-29 Charles A. Berg
A portable collapsible wheel is provided with fabric-type material spoke elements extending between the hub and the rim for performing the spoke function. The fabric-type material bears the weight of the load supported by the wheel in suspension from the rim. The spoke elements are secured to the hub and the rim and means are provided for tensioning the spoke material. The fabric-type material spoke elements diverge from each other toward the hub for triangulation and stability. The spoke elements may be in the form of disks or shallow conical elements secured to the rim as by hooks, and may be collapsed and folded into a small space. For tensioning, telescoping hub elements are described by way of example. A variety of rim constructions are also provided including a collapsible rim or segmented rim of a plurality of articulated polygonal abutting rim segments flexibly joined in sequence. Segmented rim may be folded and compressed into a circular arch with peripheral tread which forms the wheel tread. The fabric-type material spoke elements may comprise foldable strips such as ropes lines, cords or cables extending between the hub and rim and compressing the rim segments under tension. A fully collapsible wheel is therefore provided. A compression type portable wheel with conical shell spoke elements is also described.

The present invention provides a spoked wheel comprising: a rim comprising a continuous series of circumferential sections (12) each of which has opposed ends and is connected at each of its ends to an adjacent section by means of a hinge (18) that allows the two adjacent sections to pivot with respect to each other substantially in the plane of the wheel; a hub (10) that rotates with the rim; and a plurality of spokes (14,16) extending between the hub and the rim and supporting the rim on the hub, each spoke having an end that is pivotally attached to the rim via a pivot (26) At least one of the spokes is movable with respect to the hub in the plane of the wheel to change the angular spacing between adjacent spokes and alter the shape of the rim between a circular shape (Figure 4) and a non-circular shape, preferably a flattened shape (Figure 14). The wheel may also include a tubular tyre held on the rim and is primarily intended for use in connection with bicycles and wheelchars.
96 JANTE ANTI-ENLISEMENT EP06764625.7 2006-05-12 EP1943107A2 2008-07-16 Biesse, Philippe
The invention relates to a device which is used to free a vehicle that has become stuck in terrain or to reduce the risk of same, through the use of an additional tread which is disposed parallel to that of each wheel of the vehicle. The additional tread can take the form of an air chamber (2 or 10a and 10b) which may or may not be covered with a tyre (11) or of a band comprising different coupling profiles (13, 14 or 15). Said tread is mounted to an anti-sink rim essentially comprising a conical profile (1.2) and a flange (1.1) which is centred in relation to, and applied against the outer side of the rim of the vehicle wheel using at least three bolts having special heads (6), which are inserted and coupled in respective openings in the flange and rim. The diameter of the system is smaller than that of the wheel in order to facilitate mounting and to reduce the risk of interference with the body of the vehicle. The conical shape of the rim profile (1.2) lends natural stiffness to the system and, when not in use, enables same to be easily stacked in order to minimise the storage space required.
97 VEHICLE WHEEL EP04708953.7 2004-02-06 EP1610964A1 2006-01-04 Jansson, Sven A.; Edlund, Karl-Johan
A vehicle wheel with inflatable tyres, mounted on the same rim. One of the tyres (1) , called a summer tyre, has a tread suitable for summer use and at least one additional tyre (10), called a winter tyre, with a tread suitable for winter use. The winter tyre (or tyres) is mounted on the side of the summer tyre and is, in summer conditions, not fully inflated and hence not in contact with the road surface, because its circumference in its semi-inflated state has a shorter radius than that of the circumference of the summer tyre. The winter tyre (10) is securely attached to the outer surface of a concentric volume accumulator (7), which is part of the wheel rim and functions as a constantly available spare tyre. When inflated, the winter tyre (10) can expand, so that it has the same outer radius as the summer tyre (1) and thus also comes into contact with the road surface. After that, the pressure of the summer tyre is lowered and the area of contact with the road surface is redistributed to the winter tyre (or tyres).
