The present invention provides an intra-ocular lens (IOL) whose focusing performance can be modified after its implantation in the eye without a need for any invasive procedure. An IOL of the invention has an optical chamber having at least a flexible region that is deformable under influence of a fluid. The IOL further include a reservoir for storing an optical fluid in fluid communication with the optical chamber, and a valve that regulates the fluid communication between the reservoir and the optical chamber. The lens can also include a pump that is actuated by an external energy source to transfer the optical fluid between the reservoir and the optical chamber to change the amount of fluid in the optical chamber, thereby modifying the focusing performance of the IOL.

A multifocal contact lens has diffractive power arising from a series of concentric zones each providing an asymmetric retardation of light across the zone width to direct light predominantly into a required order and sign of diffraction. At least some of the concentric zones are shaped so that the step height varies so that it is different in one region (A) of the lens from that in another region (B), whereby the intensity of light associated with an image observed by diffraction at one order in that region (A) of the lens is greater than the light intensity associated with the same image when observed at the same order through another region (B) of the lens.

PURPOSE: To obtain excellent sight by combining the both of a diffraction effect and a refractive effect and providing essentially optical ability concerning a double focus ophthalmology lens. CONSTITUTION: A lens 40 is formed by a smooth front surface 42 and a back surface which is constituted by providing series of diffractive zones 46, 48, 50, 52 and 54 and the respective zones are separated by an optical step 44 being about two-thirds of design wave length through the use of the light dividing range of the max. light adaptation sensitivity of human eyes. The lens is provided with diffractive ability and two focuses, the first focus is related to first diffraction and the second focus is related to second diffraction. COPYRIGHT: (C)1992,JPO

PURPOSE: To manufacture a diffractive bifocal eyelens accurately, rapidly and with reliable reproducibility by installing a zone plate mask in a path for radiant light by laser and also providing an imaging lens with variable magnification for producing a phase zone plate by projecting an image on the surface the concave inside of the eyelens. CONSTITUTION: A beamform rectifying part 14 has a negative columnar lens 15 for spreading an output beam 13 and a positive columnar lens 16 which makes the beam again parallel. The imaging lens system 20 projects an image obtained by contracting the pattern of a zone plate mask 18 to an imaging face 30. The zone plate mask 18 is a metal mask with an opening formed in compliance with a desired zone plate pattern. The imaging lens system 20 by a zoom lens is used by setting it at many different magnifications. Thus the curvature of the imaging face 30 matched to the curvature of the inside of the uncompleted article of manufacture of a contact lens is formed and consequently, a clear image from the zone plate mask 18 is formed in the uncompleted article of manufacture 32 of a concave lens.
