1. In the pressing of tobacco and the like into bales by means of a press comprIsing a support, a charger and compression chamber movable between a first position, in which the compression chamber is removed from the support, and a second position, in which the compression chamber is operatively disposed relative to the support, and a press ram movable through the charger and into the compression chamber to form a compressed mass of tobacco in the compression chamber, the improvement comprising placing a first bale board on the support; moving the compression chamber into operative position relative to the support to define a space having the cross-sectional shape desired for the bale; filling the charger and compression chamber with loose tobacco; forcing the press ram through the charger and into the compression chamber to compress the tobacco against the first bale board; removing the press ram from the compression chamber; placing a second bale board in the compression chamber to overlie the side of the compressed mass which is opposite the first bale board; again forcing the press ram into the compression chamber to compress the mass between the two bale boards until the dimension of the compressed mass from bale board to bale board is less than that desired for the finished bale; returning the compression chamber to its first position and thereby exposing the compressed mass and the bale boards associated therewith; moving the press ram away from the support until the distance between the ram and support equals the desired corresponding dimension for the finished bale, the compressed mass tending to expand in the direction of withdrawal of the ram; pushing the combination of the compressed mass and bale boards laterally through the space between the ram and the support, said pushing step being carried out before the compressed mass can expand to such an extent as would urge the second bale board against the ram so strongly as to cause an unduly high frictional force between the ram and the second baling board; confining the combination of the compressed mass and baling boards against expansion in the direction of the space between the baling boards as the combination emerges from between the ram and the support; and applying a binding about the mass and baling boards to complete the bale.
2. In a press of the type comprising a support, a compression chamber mounted for movement between a first position, in which the chamber is spaced from the support, and a second position, in which the chamber is operatively disposed relative to the support, the support being adapted to receive a first baling board and the compression chamber having access means via which a second baling board can be inserted, and a press ram movable through the charger and into the compression chamber to form a mass of compressed material against the first baling board, the combination of pusher means mounted adjacent the support and comprising a pusher head dimensioned to engage a lateral surface presented by the combination of the compressed mass and bale boards, and a power device connected to said pusher head to force the same through the space between the press ram and the support; and confining means mounted adjacent the support in a location across the support from said pusher means, said confining means being disposed to receive the combination of the compressed mass and bale boards as it is forced from between the press ram and the support by said pusher means, said confining means including means directly engaging the bale boards when the combination of the compressed mass and bale boards is thus received.

The combination defined in claim 2, wherein the support comprises a pressure plate having a flat face directed toward the press ram, and the press ram has an opposing flat face, said flat faces being adapted to engage the respective bale boards, both of said flat faces being provided with at least one straight cross groove parallel to the direction of trAvel of said pusher head; and said pusher head has projections positioned and dimensioned for slidable engagement in said cross grooves.
4. The combination defined in claim 2 and further comprising ram stabilizing means located opposite said pusher means and operative to engage the press ram to prevent the ram from moving laterally as said pusher means is operated.
5. The combination defined in claim 2, wherein said confining means comprises a plurality of rollers disposed to engage the exposed faces of the bale boards.
6. The combination defined in claim 2, wherein the support comprises a pressure plate, and a plurality of parallel support plates disposed in planes at right angles to said pressure plate, said pressure plate having grooves in which said support plates are engaged, said support plates being transverse to the direction of travel of said pusher head.
7. The combination defined in claim 3 and further comprising ram stabilizing means located opposite said pusher means and operative to engage the press ram to prevent the ram from moving laterally as said pusher means is operated.
8. The combination defined in claim 7, wherein said confining means comprises a plurality of rollers disposed to engage the exposed faces of the bale board.
9. The combination defined in claim 4, wherein the support comprises a pressure plate, and a plurality of parallel support plates disposed in planes at right angles to said pressure plate, said pressure plate having grooves in which said support plates are engaged, said support plates being transverse to the direction of travel of said pusher head.
10. The combination defined in claim 4, wherein said confining means comprises a plurality of rollers disposed to engage the exposed faces of the bale boards.
