CONSTITUTION: Cells of a vegetable, e.g. belonging to Boraginaceae family, are cultured in a liquid medium containing an inorganic component and a carbon source as essential components, and added with at least one component selected from plant hormones, vitamins, and amino acids. The product cells are cultured in a modified liquid medium wherein the concentration of at least one component in the above liquid medium, e.g. inorganic componentns, plant hormones, vitamins, amino acids, etc. is lowered to ≤1/2 of the concentration in the above medium. The secondary metabolism product of the plant, e.g. a naphthoquinone compound, can be prepared in high efficiency by this process.
