PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the protruding of the rear part of an automobile into the interior side and transmission of impact force to enhance the safety of an occupant by fitting an inner shaft to an outer shaft in such a manner as to be slidable, arranging them in the direction orthogonal to the longitudinal direction of the automobile, and interposing a spring between the inner shaft and the outer shaft.
SOLUTION: Lateral quarter inner panels 2 are connected to a quarter outer panel 1, and support bodies 3a, 3b are fixed thereto. The support bodies 3a, 3b have support bars 4a, 4b as connecting members, and an inner shaft 5a and an outer shaft 5b are supported by the support bars 4a, 4b, respectively, through support pins 6, and arranged orthogonally to the longitudinal direction of an automobile. The tip of the inner shaft 5a is fitted into the outer shaft 5b in such a manner as to be slidable, and a spring 7 is interposed between the inner shaft 5a and the outer shaft 5b. Thus, an impact force is absorbed stepwise to reduce the impact to an occupant, and the protruding of the rear part into the interior can be suppressed to enhance the safety.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a damper of vehicle-mounted type which is placed adjacent to work zones along a highway for reliably stopping a high-speed vehicle.
SOLUTION: A supporting frame 10 mounts a damper 12 of truck-mounted type on a backup vehicle. The supporting frame 10 has a rear part 14 which is connected to a front part by a linkage 18, and the linkage 18 has two distanced S side frames 20. Each side frame 20 has three hinges 26, 28 and 30, and is so constructed that the middle hinge 28 is folded up outwardly in collision. Each hinge rotates about a vertical hinge axis with the front part 16 being supported. The supporting frame 10 is maintained in the initial form by a restraining cable connected between the linkage 18 and the front part 16. The cable 34 is releasably attached to the front part 16 by a trigger mechanism which is actuated according to the position of a probe mounted on TMA.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To smoothly develop an air bag body toward the side of an occupant seated at at a seat without making the width of the seat narrow even when a side door and a center pillar are deformed inward in the car width direction.
SOLUTION: At the time of side collision, when a center pillar garnish 38 is deformed toward the inner side in the car width direction together with a center pillar 36, the center pillar garnish 38 abuts against a spacer 46 at the side part 12A of a seat back 12 by way of a load transmitting member 42, its movement to the inner side in the car width direction is restrained by a seat back frame 18 reinforced by a reinforcing member 44. This constitution thereby enables a lid 28 to be developed in a space between the center pillar garnish 38 and an air bag device 14, and also allows a clearance to be formed, in which an air bag body 48 can be smoothly developed toward the side part of an occupant.

PURPOSE:To securely prevent the attitude variation of a unit due to a panel at the time of car collision and make the space between them reducible by setting the rigidity of a part facing the air bag unit of a dash upper panel lower. CONSTITUTION:An air bag unit 20 is integrated into the inside of an instrument panel 1, and further a dash lower panel 3, a dash upper panel 4 and a cowl upper panel 5 are respectively provided one after another from the lower part in the back side. In this instance, in the part facing the air bag unit 20 of the dash upper panel 4, its rigidity is formed by a low rigidity panel 4a having lower rigidity than a casing 21 in said unit 20. And, at the time of car collision, the low rigidity panel 4a that moves rearward is forced to abut the abovementioned unit 20 to deform it, thereby the attitude variation of said unit 20 is prevented. With these means, the air bag is expanded from the abovementioned unit 20 in a proper state. |

1391780 Vehicle doors GKN SANKEY Ltd and ARO PLASTICS DEVELOPMENT Ltd 30 Nov 1972 [24 Dec 1971] 53760/71 Heading B7J [Also in Division F2] An energy absorbing device for use in car doors and bumpers comprises a composite consisting of a matrix 10 having therein a reinforcing element 11 in the form of first tubular members 12 and second tubular members 13 extending between and frictionally gripped within, the first members, the bond between the first members 12 and matrix being of greater shear strength than the frictional engagement between the first and second members. If the composite overloaded in tension matrix 10 fractures and each member 13 starts to move out of its associated members 12 to absorb energy due to friction forces between the members 12, 13. If the composite is overloaded in compression, members 13 move together in members 12. The space within each member 12 between each pair of end portions 14 of members 13 may be filled with a resilient or friable material such as a foamed plastics. The ends of members 12 are chamfered. Matrix 10 may be of a synthetic polymeric material such as a thermoplastic or thermosetting material, for example a polyester resin, which may be reinforced with glass or other fibres. The members may be of mild steel or high strength, high modulus, synthetic polymeric material reinforced by glass or carbon fibres. Relative movement between the members may be accompanied by cold work by forming. The first tubular member is defined at two adjacent portions 24, 25 of oval shape whose major axes are transverse so that for the second member to move relative to the first member the latter will have to be deformed by the second and do cold work on it. In a construction for a vehicle door two composites are provided each of which extends between a common lock and latch and a hinge of the door. |
