204 FURTHER ADVANCEMENTS OF THE IMPROVED VEHICLE CHASSIS PCT/US2005040349 2005-11-08 WO2006101537A2 2006-09-28 DAY ROBIN D
A self propelled conveyance is disclosed having an extendable frame. A floor pan is attached to the inner perimeter of the extendable frame and a driver's seat is disposed on a front to back center line of the floor pan. A pair of front wheels are attached to the extendable frame. The front wheels extend beyond the outer perimeter of the frame. A rear wheel assembly is one or two individual wheels separated by a short distance. Like the front wheels, the rear wheel assemble extends beyond the outer perimeter of the frame. Passenger seats are disposed behind the driver seat and each of the passenger seats are offset from the center line of the conveyance. Because the wheels extend beyond the perimeter of the frame, they act as active collision shock absorbers in collisions.

A vehicle mounted crash attenuator includes first and second bays mounted together at a rotational joint. One or more hydraulic cylinders are mounted between the bays to move the second bay between a deployed position, in which the first and second bays are aligned horizontally, and a retracted position, in which the second bay is rotated about the rotational joint by a rotation angle greater than 90 DEG from the deployed position. In this way, the second bay is raised above the first bay, and the overall length of the crash attenuator is shortened, all without excessively increasing the overall height of the crash attenuator.

207 Impact absorbing support for a wheel US15209468 2016-07-13 US10029756B2 2018-07-24 Duncan Bayard Stothers
An impact absorbing mechanism for a wheel is provided. The mechanism has discs that are engaged so that rotation of a first disc causes translational movement of a second disc. A restraining member such as a spring acts against translational movement of the second disc to absorb energy from a head on collision or aggressive braking. Once the mechanism is fully activated, teeth on the first and second discs engage to prevent kick back from the restraining member. In some embodiments, a ratchet mechanism is provided to prevent kick back from the restraining member even when the impact absorbing mechanism is not fully activated.
