The socket head (6) may be located selectively at either end of an unequal L-shaped bar (14) enabling the brace to be gripped at (12) or (13) for the respective loosening or tightening of wheel nuts. A one-way ratchet mechanism (15) is adapted to be locked in the wheel nut loosening direction but is free in the wheel nut tightening direction preventing use of the longer length bar to tighten the nuts. A jack-driving attachment (9, 10) may be provided and attached in place of socket head (6). The wheel brace may comprise several separate parts attached or attachable together to provide the appropriate L-shaped configuration such that a nut loosening torque may be approximately twice the available nut tightening torque.

A tool (shown from the wheel side) for loosening a wheel nut comprises a lead screw 20 for generating with mechanical advantage an output force for rotating a lever 10 towards an elongate member 11 to which it is pivotally secured at a point 1. The screw 20 passes through a free non-threaded collar 22, a non-threaded pivoted collar 25 in lever 10 and a threaded pivoted collar (28) at a point 3 in the member 11. A socket for engaging the nut to be loosened is non-rotatably secured to the lever 10 at or adjacent the point 1 and the elongate member supports a rotatable and longitudinally adjustable wheel nut socket 2 spaced from the point 1 for engaging another wheel nut thereby to prevent rotation of the member 11. In use the head 21 of screw 20 is brought to bear on collar 25 via collar 22, and friction reducing means may be provided between head 21 and collar 22. Collar 25 being non-threaded facilitates initial fitting of the tool to the wheel whatever the alignment of the wheel nuts. Modifications of the construction are described.
