The invention relates to a device for handling a vehicle wheel, especially for removing a wheel of a lorry from a shaft (24) or for installing it in position, comprising a vertically movable frame portion (2), and gripping means (11, 12, 13) connected to said frame portion for gripping the vehicle wheel (14) and lifting or otherwise displacing the wheel (14) from the shaft (24) or back onto the shaft (24), the gripping means (11, 12, 13) comprising two or more support members (21, 22, 23) arranged to be fitted into a disc wheel groove (20) in the edge of a disc wheel (16) to be handled. The support members (21, 22, 23) are such in shape that the vehicle wheel is rotatable on the support members (21, 22, 23) fitted into the disc wheel groove (20).

83 Self-propelled tire dolly EP93108349.7 1993-05-24 EP0571917A2 1993-12-01 Asaumi, Masayuki, c/o BRIDGESTONE CORPORATION; Kanatomi, Tokio, No. 803, Tateishi-DK-Haimu; Kamanoi, Fumio

A self-propelled tire dolly (16) for transporting a tire in a working area for performing tire removal and mounting services by placing the tire on a tire-supporting section which is raised or lowered by a lifting device. The tire dolly is supported by three wheels (24, 26), and a drive wheel (26) among the three wheels is located at a central portion of the base on the rear side thereof. A steering handle (32) is provided above the drive wheel (26). Since the drive wheel constituted by a single wheel and the steering handle are located in the center on this side during manoeuvering, the tire dolly is easy to steer. The steering handle can be retreated from a fixed position to obtain a working space during tire removal or mounting.

86 Dolly for heavy objects EP89202802.8 1989-11-07 EP0384994A1 1990-09-05 Eltvik, Björn

A dolly for facilitating the moving of heavy objects. The dolly includes a chassis (1-4) for supporting the object (24) and having roller means (13-20) enabling the chassis to be rolled on the ground or the floor (23). The top side of the chassis has plane abutment surfaces (1d, 2d, 3d) which are located above the roller means (13-20) and permitting the dolly to be turned upside down and to rest with the abutment surfaces against the ground (23). The chassis has a through hole (6), the size of which is adjustable, and in which the object may rest when the dolly is placed with its roller means on the ground, and, as well, when the dolly is turned upside down and rests with the abutment surfaces against the ground, the dolly in its upside down position thereby being capable of serving as a chock for the object. The hole (6) is open also towards one side to permit the dolly, in its upside down position, to be slid into place under the object (24), also if this rests on the ground.

87 Improved apparatus and method for jacking and dollying an affixed vehicle wheel assembly EP88303006.6 1988-04-05 EP0317044A2 1989-05-24 Coccaro, Albert V.

Apparatus and method for jacking and dollying a vehicle wheel assembly, while the assembly remains affixed to the vehicle, the wheel assembly including a pneumatic tire, a wheel and an axle. The apparatus (1) features a "U" shaped framework (10) having telescoping body section members (12) to which orthogonally extending arms (14,16) are attached. Wheel assembly engaging elements (18,20) in the form of roller assemblies (22,24) are mounted on the framework arms (14,16) for engaging the tire (4) of a wheel assembly (2) located therebetween for lifting. The apparatus (1) also includes an actuator (26) mounted on the framework body section (12) members for driving the roller assemblies (22,24) against the wheel assembly tire (4) to cause left, and form the framework (10) and roller assemblies (22,24) into a carriage for retaining the wheel assembly (2). Still further, the framework (10) is mounted on casters (28,30,32,34) to enable transport of the supported wheel assembly (2) and framework (10). The actuator (26) is preferably foot operated and includes a bi-directional, double pawl, lever ratchet mechanism having a lever means (102) pivotally mounted to one body section member (36) together with a first and a second pawl, and a rack provided at the other body section member (38). The actuator (26) also includes direction control elements (110) having a first setting to enable the apparatus (1) to lift the wheel assembly (2), and a second setting to enable the apparatus (1) to lower the wheel assembly (2). The method features steps for driving a plurality of wheel engaging elements, at least one of which includeds a roller assembly, against the tread face of the tire (4) of the wheel assembly (2) to be lifted by leveraging for a predetermine distance the coupling member of one wheel engaging element from a fulcrum located on the coupling member of another wheel engaging element, then bracing the coupling members against separation, and thereafter, resetting and re-leveraging to successively drive the wheel engaging elements against the wheel assembly (2) to produce lift.

89 Device for facilitating the mounting and dismounting of large vehicle wheels EP81850203 1981-10-30 EP0052586A3 1983-04-06 Kristerson, Olof

The invention relates to an accessory for fitting and removing large vehicle wheels, e.g. pneumatic tyred wheels for tractors, trucks etc.

The arrangement consists of a preferably U-shaped horizontal frame (1) mounted on wheels which is designed to be placed close to a vehicle wheel (5), parallel with the side of the wheel and with the free limbs (2, 3) of the frame (1) projecting in front of and behind the wheel, respectively. The frame carries a vertical pedestal (7) with an arm (8), hinge-mounted at the top of the pedestal which by means of a hydraulic cylinder (18) can be swivelled parallel with the side of the vehicle wheel. At its free end the arm (8) carries a supporting roller (9) which is rotatable around an axis of rotation parallel with the axis of the wheel (5). As a result of the arm (8) being swivelled upwards the supporting roller (9) is made to engage with the rim so as to lift the wheel, which then hangs on the supporting roller (9) and at the bottom the tyre side of the wheel rests against two supporting rollers (19) provided on the frame.

The arrangement permits a single person to lift large vehicle wheels, to move the wheel on a horizontal surface to a vehicle which has been elevated by means of a jack, and then with little effort by twisting the wheel to align the bolt holes centrally with the bolts and then to fix the wheel to the hub.
