When the carrier goes up the steps, the driving mechanism drives the driving wheels, and at this time, the wheels receive the resistance of the steps to be regarded as a fixed rod, and the power is output from a connecting plate of the planetary frame through the transmission mechanism to generate the operation for striding the step and complete the operation of going the steps. When the carrier goes down the steps, the driving mechanism drives the driving wheels, and at this time, the transmission mechanism selects a relatively power-saving lever material and outputs the same by itself. The power is output from one or both relatively power-saving members of the wheels and the planetary frame through the transmission mechanism to complete the operation of going down the steps. CONSTITUTION: A crawler unit for a wheelchair consists of a wheelchair 1, a crawler unit 2 and the adapter 3 mounting the wheelchair to the crawler unit 2 to adjust the same. The user of the wheelchair moves the wheelchair 1 on the crawler unit 2 until connection members 21, 27 are sufficiently connected to fix a mechanism by the engagement of a stop roller 29 with a guide passage 30. When the user of the wheelchair draws a lever 32 or 33 toward the adapter 3, the wheelchair is inclined around a shaft 22 until a backrest 7 is mounted on a frame 17 and a latch 18 is engaged in a lock state. The crawler unit 2 can be selectively raised by the operation of the lever 32 or 33. The wheelchair 1 is raised through the crawler unit 2 and moved by operating a crawler driving apparatus. Thus, when the wheels arrives at the stairway, it is detected by means of a torque detector, the links to support the wheels are turned around the frame by means of the signals, one wheel is moved onto the upper face of the stairway, and the driving wheels are transferred to this wheel, so that running can be continued even on the stairway.
