A self-contained keyboard for a computer (17) transmits keystroke data to a host computer via scan codes encoded in a variable magnetic field. A receiving loop (47) connected to demodulator circuitry (40) in the body of the computer (17) produces emf spikes according to the magnetic bursts transmitted from the keyboard (15). The demodulator circuitry (49) reproduces digital scan codes in a registrer (51) for communication to the computer CPU according to the emf spikes monitored from the receiving loop (47).

Keyboard 5 is provided with a lower recess 22, shaped in such a way as to allow more stable positioning of the keyboard on the operator's lap. The keyboard 5 may of the cordless type, with infrared rays for transmitting data to an equipment located at a distance from it.

Thus, it's possible to prevent a case, where most of the battery power is consumed at the display part 260 of the device 200 when the device 200 functions as a wireless input device.
