In accordance with the invention, the press has an inner belt (20), running in a loop inside the loop of the forming wire around the first press member and through the press nip and having water-receiving voids (22) that are open towards the forming wire. When the belt is the only water-receiving member, the voids of the belt constitute an open volume that is equal to or greater than the volume of water pressed out of the web in the press nip.
