CONSTITUTION: Trimer of monochloroacetaldehyde (a stable compound) is distilled under normal pressure in the presence of an acid catalyst (e.g. p- toluenesulfonic acid) at 120-140°C to depolymerize the trimer and distill out monochloroacetaldehyde having high purity. The distilled fraction is dissolved in water to obtain the objective aqueous solution of monochloroacetaldehyde having arbitrary concentration. The aqueous solution prepared by this process is storable over a long period with little discoloration and change of composition. It is useful as a synthetic raw material for pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, etc.
