CONSTITUTION: The photosensitive layer made essentially of a-Si is composed of at least three layers 1, 2, 3, and the second layer 2 from the surface serves as the rectifying layer 2 having charge same as the charging polarity as minority carriers. Such a photosensitive layer undergoes corona discharge to be charged positively, and is uniformly exposed to short wavelength light 5. From pairs of electrons and positive holes produced by the exposure, the electrons transfer to the layer 3, and the holes transfer toward the substrate 4. But since the holes are minority carriers in the layer 2, they remain as the residual charge near the interface of the layer 2, 3. An electrostatic latent image 7 is formed by imagewise exposing the layer 1 to long wavelength light 6 and producing electrons in the layer 1, a toner is attached to the surface of the photosensitive layer to develop on the image. Since the latent image is formed in the inside of the photosensitive layers, loss of the charge due to development and image transfer is small, thus permitting plural copies to be formed in succession by forming the latent image in one time.
