In the process, the reaction is carried out in the presence of a solid super acid consisting of a metallic oxide, e.g. zirconium oxide, iron oxide or titanium oxide, and sulfuric acid ions, preferably dilute sulfuric acid, in combination. The catalyst has the following advantages: No halogen is contained, and there is no problem in the preparation and disposal thereof. It is stable to water and usable even in the case of a nonaqueous system. The reduced activity can be regenerated by the heat treatment, etc.
