1. A PROCESS FOR PREPARING A 2-(4-ALKYLPHENYL-PROPIONIC ACID OF THE FORMULA
2. A process according to claim 1, wherein steps (a), (b) and (c) are conducted in the same reaction vessel without isolation of the intermediate products.
3. A process according to claim 1, wherein step (a) is effected at a temperature of 60*-90*C. for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
4. A process according to claim 1, wherein the alkaline hydrolysis conditions of step (b) are provided by an alkali metal hydroxide.
5. A process according to claim 4, wherein said alkali metal hydroxide is formed in situ by adding water to the reaction mixture obtained in step (a) to react with the alkali metal alcoholate therein and heating the resultant admixture under reflux for 10-30 minutes.
6. A process according to claim 1, wherein an alkali metal salt of said pyruvic acid is converted into the free acid by rendering the reaction mixture weakly acidic with a mineral acid prior to oxidation.
7. A process according to claim 1, wherein step (c) is effected at a temperature of 10*-25*C. for 10-20 hours.
8. A process according to claim 2, wherein: a. the reaction of said butenoic acid ester with said alkali metal alcoholate is effected at a temperature of 60*-90*C. for 30 minutes to 1 hour; b. the hydrolysis of said pyruvate is effected by adding water to the reaction mixture of step (a) and heating under reflux for 10-30 minutes; and c. the oxidation of the resultant pyruvic acid or salt thereof is effected at a temperature of 10*-25*C. for 10-20 hours.
