CONSTITUTION: A transparent electrochromic material 1 such as PLZT or PBLN is formed at its one side with a wider transparent display electrode 2 and at its other side with a narrower opposite electrode 3. The material 1 thus formed is sandwitched between polarizing plates 4 and 5 and is formed further with a reflecting plate 6 at the outside of the plate 5, thus constituting a display device. In case the material 1 has a thickness of about 50 microns, the width of the disply electrode 2 can be about 50 to 200 microns for the opposite elecdtrode 3 having a width of about 5 to 10 microns. With a view to concentrating the electric field and strengthening the fringe effects of the electrode ends, the contrast can be increased while the drive is made at a low voltage.
