The valve assembly (17) comprises an air inlet (20) for allowing air to enter the valve assembly (17) from the exterior (19) of the tire (1), an air outlet (30) for allowing air to enter the tire cavity (11), a first valve (22) interposed in the air flow of the air passageway (15), the first valve (22) having a first position allowing air to enter the air passageway (15) through the air inlet (20) in a first flow direction and a second position allowing air to enter the air passageway (15) through the air inlet (20) in a second flow direction opposite to the first direction, and a second valve (32) interposed in the air flow of the air passageway (15) in parallel to the first valve (22). When the first valve (22) is in the first position, the second valve (32) is in a third position allowing air flowing through the air passageway (15) in the first flow direction to exit the air passageway (15) through the air outlet (30). When the first valve (22) is in the second position, the second valve (32) is in a fourth position allowing air flowing through the air passageway (15) in the second flow direction to exit the air passageway (15) through the air outlet (30).

The apparatus has an elongated valve housing (1) with an inlet end (IA), an outlet end (2) and a central portion between the outlet end (2) and inlet end (1A). The outlet end includes a rim insertion portion (3) configured to fit into an aperture in the tyre rim. A piston (8) is disposed within the housing (1). The piston includes a valve member (19). A coil spring (22) acts between the housing (1) and piston (8). In use, the piston (8) is biased to an open position for passage of air into the tyre and is movable against the spring bias under air pressure build up in the tyre to a closed position. At the closed position, the valve member (19) seals against a valve seat (21). The piston (8) and spring (22) are located in the central portion of the housing (1) clear of the rim insertion portion (3). The rim insertion portion (3) is of a reduced size not obstructive to the mounting of the tyre.

In order to fabricate the valve, a web (11) is used on which are welded two bands (12, 13), separated by a gap (5).
