11 Membrane filtered milk proteins varying in composition and functional attributes US153619 1998-09-15 US6139901A 2000-10-31 Neil D. Blazey; Ralph J. Knights; Chao Wu
A process is described for treating an approximately neutral fluid milk composition, including milk protein concentrate and milk plus added whey, by selecting an alkali, adjusting the pH upward, heating, cooling, selecting an acid, and adjusting the pH down before ultrafiltering and, in a more preferred process, thereafter diafiltering the treated composition. Selection of the appropriate alkali, pH values, temperatures, acid, and membrane filter porosity results in improved yields of retentate proteins having selected compositions with improved utility, including a more palatable flavor, a brod range of solution viscosities, an increase in the solubility of the dried retentates in cold water to nearly 100%, and an increase in the calcium content of the membrane filtered retentate by about 50% compared to a similar retentate from standard milk. Appropriate selection of processing conditions can result in at least one filter permeate with a protein composition enriched in alpha lactalbumin, a protein that is highly beneficial for human nutrition.

13 Dietary regimen of nutritional supplements for relief of symptoms of arthritis US193474 1998-11-18 US6136795A 2000-10-24 Vito V. Florio
This invention is directed to a dietary regimen and a unique combination of nutritional supplements and a method. More specifically, this invention is directed to a unique combination of nutritional supplements which provides symptomatic relief from arthritis. The unique combination of nutritional supplements of this invention is believed to function by both increasing the available (effective blood level) of anti-inflammatory agents and promotion of the healing/regenerative process in the effected joints, thus, producing unexpected and lasting symptomatic relief from the debilitating effects of both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The essential nutritional supplements of the dietary regimen of this invention are as follows:(a) gamma linolenic acid (unrefined), hereinafter "GLA"(b) a mixture of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaneoic acid, hereinafter collectively "EPA"(c) a mixture of chondroitin sulfate, N-acetyl glucosamine sulfate, glucosamine sulfate and manganese aspartate, hereinafter collectively "CHONDROX"The regimen is adjusted based upon the weight of the individual, and once symptomatic relief is achieved, the individual remains essentially free from the debilitating effects of arthritis so as long the daily regimen is faithfully followed.

A method for enhancing the dissolution properties of relatively insoluble dietary supplements is provided in accordance with the invention. The method includes the steps of providing at least one relatively water insoluble dietary supplement, solubilizing the dietary supplement with a solubilizer, and incorporating an edible polyhydric alcohol into the solubilized dietary supplement to provide a liquid dietary supplement composition that will dissolve spontaneously in the gastrointestinal tract with the minimum agitation which normally occurs there due to peristaltic action. The liquid dietary supplement composition can be readily supplied by incorporation in a gelatin capsule and a gelatin capsule having a liquid dietary supplement incorporated therein is also provided in accordance with the invention. The gelatin capsule dissolves readily in the digestive tract and the dietary supplement has enhanced bioavailability in comparison to prior art gelatin capsules.
