Composition and methods which include a dental bleaching agent and potassium nitrate for enhanced whitening and reduced tooth sensitivity. The potassium nitrate both enhances the whiteness of teeth beyond the whitening effect of the dental agent and reduces or eliminates tooth sensitivity that would otherwise be caused by the bleaching agent. For prolonged treatment of teeth, lower quantities of potassium nitrate (e.g., 0.5 %) have actually been found to work better than larger quantities (e.g., 3 %). The dental compositions (40) may be applied directly to the person's teeth, or they may be loaded into a comfortable fitting, flexible, thin-walled dental tray (50) and placed over the person's teeth. In that case, the dental compositions (40) will include a tackifying agent, such as carboxypolymethylene, which assists the composition in retaining the dental tray (50) over the person's teeth as a result of the adhesive properties of the dental composition (40) rather than due to mechanical interlocking of the tray (50) over the person's teeth. The dental compositions may further include anticariogenic and antimicrobial agents.

The present invention discloses high viscosity sustained release dental compositions, such as tooth bleaching or fluoride compositions, for treating tooth surfaces. For maximum results, an improved dental tray having reservoirs for holding the dental composition adjacent the desired tooth surfaces is preferably used in combination with the sustained release dental composition. The sustained release dental compositions include a high carboxypolymethylene concentration which results in very high viscosity. The high level of carboxypolymethylene makes dilution of the dental compositions from saliva difficult and time consuming so that the compositions stay within the tray reservoirs, thereby providing sustained release. The concentrated carboxypolymethylene adds a unique tackiness to the dental composition which helps retain and seal the soft tray material against the patient's teeth.

134 Method for bleaching teeth JP24967195 1995-09-27 JPH08113520A 1996-05-07 FISCHER DAN E
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved method for bleaching the surface of teeth of a person intending to make the appearance of the surface of the teeth beautiful. SOLUTION: A prescribed amount of a dental bleaching composition is placed in a dental tray, which is then arranged on the tooth surface so as to bring a part of the composition into contact with a tooth to be bleached. Thereby, the dental tray is arranged on the tooth surface. After the passage of a prescribed time, the dental tray is removed from the tooth to bleach the tooth. The dental bleaching composition comprises about 3 to about 20 wt.%, preferably about 4 to about 15 wt.% carbamide peroxide as a dental bleaching agent and a matrix material containing about 3.5 to about 12 wt.%, preferably about 4.5 to about 10 wt.% carboxypolypolymethylene as the matrix material for dispersing the bleaching agent therein. The carboxypolymethylene contained therein at the concentration has a high viscosity and is hardened when brought into contact with a saliva to form a seal around the dental tray. Thereby, the composition is held in a state thereof in contact with the tooth surface.

Special tools and materials are provided for the fitting and placement of artificial crowns and inlays in a patient's mouth. One version of the kit comprises test ribbons, ribbon gripping forceps, crown gripping forceps, a crown placement tool, an adhesive dispenser, expendable adhesive, an adhesive dispenser stand, an inlay/veneer placement tool, and a number of plastic or metal shims. The inlay placement tool is fitted with hot-melt adhesive on its tip for fixed attachment of an inlay or veneer for placement in the mouth. The crown placement tool is adhered with hot melt adhesive to the biting surface of a posterior crown to be used as a crown placing device. The ribbon forceps is used to grip a thin precut test ribbon and hold the ribbon in the patient's mouth vertically on either the front or back side of an artificial crown being placed. The crown placement tool is used to position an artificial crown in the patient's mouth onto the prepared tooth alongside the test-ribbon, whereby withdrawing the test ribbon with the ribbon forceps tests and marks the area of interproximal contact of the crown or inlay as well as the amount of pressure of the contact. The crown gripping forceps is also used to place an artificial crown for final cementation. The adhesive is not only used to place and remove an artificial crown or inlay for fitting, but is also used for the patient to bite on during cementation to keep the crown or inlay seated.

PURPOSE: To increase the hardness of an undersurface of a dental restorative material after photocuring by interposing a coating containing a fluorescent material, etc., capable of emitting fluorescence at a wavelength for photocuring the restorative material when exposed to radiant energy between a dental substrate, etc., and the dental restorative material. CONSTITUTION: (A) A fluorescent material capable of emitting fluorescence at a wavelength for photocuring a restorative material 11 when exposed to radiant energy in a quantity so as to increase the hardness of an undersurface of the photocurable dental restorative material 11 after the photocuring or (B) a coating 12 containing a reflective material capable of reflecting the radiant energy at a wavelength for photocuring the restorative material 11 is applied to a dental substrate or its model 10 and a thin layer 14 of the restorative material 11 is then applied onto the coating 12. The thin layer 14 is subsequently exposed to the radiant energy at the wavelength to photocure the restorative material 11. The hardness of the undersurface of the restorative material 11 is increased to reduce the difference between the top surface and the undersurface in hardness. The thicker restorative material layer than a conventional layer can be photocured. COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO
