The invention comprises compounds of the formula wherein Y is an oxygen or sulphur atom, R is a halogen atom or a C1- 3 alkyl, C1- 3 haloalkyl, nitro, amino or sulphamoyl group, n and m are numbers from 0 to 3 and X- is an anion. The compounds are prepared by cyclizing an appropriately substituted or unsubstituted iodosodiphenyl ether or thioether, the cyclization being effected, for example, by treating the iodoso compound with concentrated sulphuric or phosphoric acid. The iodoso compound is prepared by chlorinating the corresponding iodo compound to prepare the iododichloride followed by alkaline hydrolysis. Compositions having antibacterial, antifungal and antimildew activity comprise a compound of the invention together with an extending agent or carrier.ALSO:Compounds of the formula: wherein Y is an oxygen or sulphur atom, R is a halogen atom or a C1-3 alkyl, C1-3 haloalkyl, nitro, amine or sulphancyl group, n and m are numbers from 0 to 3 and X- is an anion, having antibacterial, antifungal and antimildew activity, are added to foods to prevent the growth of micro organisms therein.ALSO:Disinfectant compositions comprise a compound of the formula: wherein Y is an oxygen or sulphur atom, R is a halogen atom or a C1-3 alkyl, C1-3 haloalkyl, nitro, amino or sulphamoyl group, n and m are numbers from 4 to 3 and X- is an anion.
