PREPARATION: A strain in Streptomyces, capable of producing an antibiotic, oxanosine, e.g., Streptomyces capreolus MG 265-CF 3 strain (FERM-5735), is cultured under neutral or slightly acidic conditions through the liquid or submerged fermentation process at 25W35°C and oxanosine is separated from the culture mixture. Physical and chemical properties of oxanosine are as follows: appearance, light grey needle crystals; melting point, it shows no definite melting or decomposition point and gradually decomposes over 199°C; specific rotatory power [α]D

2 O); solubility, soluble in water, methanol, insoluble or hard soluble in ethanol, acetone; color reactions, positive to Leiden- Smith reagent and 5% sulfuric acid, negative to ninhydrin and Sakaguchi reagent.
