Therefore, the ratio of the wall thickness tp of the covering tube 6 to its outside dia. Dp is made greater than the corresponding ratio tu/Du of the fuel rod 3, and the mechanical strength of the covering tube 6 is made stronger than the fuel rod 2 and the gadolinia- added U fuel rod 3. Thus the soundness of the covering tube 6 can be well maintained even in the latest period of combustion when the tube inner pressure heightens. Also a high grade of combustion can be achieved to ensure enhancement of the economy.
