This image light forms the mark image on the subject eye fundus Ef through the taking lens 4 of the objective system, a focusing lens 3 moved by a servo-driving system 42 and an objective lens 1 The reflected image light is received by a photoelectric transducer 38 by way of an imaging lens 36 by reverse-advancing in the optical system and the position of the lens 3 is controlled by a processing circuit 41 which controls the exciter 40 and driving system 42, so that the output of the element 38 becomes maximum every time when the prism 33 passes the reference point, whereby the automatic focus detection is accomplished without any hindrance even when the eye to be examined approaches to the objective system by way of the objective system.
