In the event of main power line failure, the battery continues to supply the normal DC potential to drive the amplifier, but the biasing potential dervied from the full-wave rectifier is no longer present and the oscillator transistors are therefore no longer biased in their non-oscillating mode. Powered by the emergency battery, the oscillator produces high frequency sinusoidal output current which is delivered through the clamp-on leads directly to the terminals of the fluorescent lamp during main power line failure.
