CONSTITUTION: Coal tar pitch of free carbon content ≤1% or coal tar of free carbon content ≤0.6% is thermally treated at 350W450°C to form not more than 1% mesophase. The softening point of the obtd. coal tar pitch of coal tar is adjusted to a desired value. When high-temp. carbonized coal tar or coal tar pitch is used as a raw material, a high carbonization yield is obtd. because of high aromaticity and a high carbonization rate. Thus it is poasible to uniformly impregnate a carbon product with a large amt. of pitch and to economically prepare a pitch for impregnation excellent in impregnation efficiency and carbonized in a high yeild.
