CONSTITUTION: A monomer mixture consisting of not less than 70wt% α-alkylstyrene represented by the formula, wherein R
1 is a 1W3C alkyl, R
2 is a 1W3C alkyl or a haloalkyl, e.g., α-methylstyrene, and not more than 30wt% vinyl cyanide is emulsion-polymerized by using a radical initiator, e.g., potassium persulfate. The polymerization reaction is stopped when the content of unreacted vinyl cyanide becomes 3wt% or lower, based on the total monomers. Then, title high α-alkylstyrene content copolymer is obtained advantageously by introducing steam into the resulting copolymer latex thereby to separate and recover the unreacted monomers remaining in the copolymer latex.
