1. An apparatus for forming packaged coils of wire or the like supplied continuously in a helix, said apparatus comprising: a normally horizontal lower platform displaceable perpendicularly to itself; inner and outer guides extending codirectionally from said lower platform and forming therewith a generally cylindrically annular space terminated at one end by said lower platform and opening upwardly in the normal position of said lower platform; means for pivoting said guides and said platform between said normal position in which said face is substantially vertical space and a substantially horizontal position of said space; an upper platform spaced from said lower platform in the direction of displacement thereof, said upper platform being displaceable between a first position terminating the other end of said space and receiving the continuously supplied wire and a second position allowing said wire to fall into said space onto said lower platform; means for displacing said upper platform from said first position into said second position only on said space being in its vertical position; and means for displacing said lower platform toward said upper platform for compacting said wire in said space against said upper platform in said vertical position of said space and for expelling the compacted wire from said space in said horizontal position of said space.

2. The apparatus defined in claim 1 wherein said guides are each formed by a plurality of parallel rods.

3. The apparatus defined in claim 1 wherein said upper platform is formed by a plurality of horizontally oriented disks rotatable about respective vertical axes.

4. The apparatus defined in claim 1, further comprising means for axially displacing said guides through a predetermined distance.

5. The apparatus defined in claim 1 wherein said means for displacing said lower platform includes a telescoping pressurizible cylinder.

6. The apparatus defined in claim 1 wherein said guides, said lower platform, and said means for displacing said lower platform are all carried on a mounting element pivotal about a substantially horizontal axis.

7. The apparatus defined in claim 1, further comprising means for tying together the compacted wire.

8. The apparatus defined in claim 7 wherein said means for tying together said wire comprises means for passing a loop of an elongated tying element around said coil and means for winding together the ends of said loop.

9. The apparatus defined in claim 8, wherein said means for tying together said wire further comprises means for radially passing an end of said tying element through said space and holding said end at the interior of said space, whereby descending turns of said helix fall on said element such that same forms a loop around it on the inside, bottom, and outside of said space, and means for inserting another portion of said element radially in through said space and connecting same to said means for winding together said ends of said loops.

10. The apparatus defined in claim 1, furtHer comprising means adjacent said guides for carrying off the compacted coil of wire horizontally after same is bushed by said lower platform from said space.
