The advancing piston rod carries a cam-like abutment to pivot a latch having first and second stops to a position where a spring pressed detent retains the latch at the end of the advancing and joint forming movement of the piston rod. The first stop would be engaged by the abutment upon too early withdrawal of the piston rod and thus prevent retraction of the joint forming dies unless the mechanism had been fully advanced.
