CONSTITUTION: An isothiocyanic acid ester which is a main component of Japanese horseradish is used as a safe fumigant in place of methyl bromide. For example, a fumigation object is made to contact with a gas 10 containing vapor of the above ester in a fumigation chamber 3, preferably the gas 17 in the fumigation chamber 3 is treated 5 with an adsorbent to adsorb and remove the vapor of said ester from the gas and the treated gas is exhausted 22 to outer atmosphere. As an alternative, air mixed with the vapor of said ester is used as carrier gas for pneumatic transportation of crops. The fumigation object can be economically fumigated by using the above fumigant having low flammability and extremely high safety to human body and exhibiting high fumigatory effect at an extremely low concentration.
