CONSTITUTION: A microbicide containing a furan derivative of formula I (R
1 is cycloalkyl, lower alkyl or phenyl; R
2 is lower alkyl), e.g. 2-cyclohexylmethanoyl- 2,5-dimethoxy-2,5-dihydrofuran, as an effective component. The furan derivative of formula I can be prepared, e.g. by the electrolytic oxidation of a furfuryl alcohol derivative of formula II in an alcohol of formula III in the presence of a proper catalyst, e.g. ammonium bromide.
USE: Effective to rice blast, late blight of cucumber, anthracnose of cucumber, sclerotinia rot of eggplant, early blight of tomato, etc. It is also useful for the mold-proofing and stain-proofing of paint, etc., disinfection of industrial water, control of growth of agar in water, etc.
