A process for the manufacture of humidity resistant matches comprises forming a bulb of an aqueous match head composition on the end of a match splint, and drying the bulb to form the match head. The composition comprises a mixture of potassium chlorate, filler, comb stible materiall and a water-soluble or waterdispersible binder. The aqueous match composition comprises, as said binder, a water soluble or water-dispersible salt of a polyacrylic or substituted polyacrylic acid with ammonia or a volatile amine and as the filler, or as a component thereor, zinc oxide.

Match head formulations suitable for the production of safety matches in which chromium compounds, sesqui-based phosphorus compounds, sulphur compounds and oxides of zinc are absent. Instead those match head formulations contain amorphous phosphorus in combination with potassium chlorate, the balance being made up of a binder, a thickener, a filler, and a foaming agent. The amorphous phosphorus is present in the range from 0,5 to 2,0 percent dry weight. These formulations are environmentally friendly both in manufacture and use.

Environmentally friendly match head formulations which may be brightly coloured are also described.

32 A method of controlling chemical reactivity and products produced by such method EP87850217.8 1987-07-03 EP0252053A3 1991-11-13 Johansson, Stig; Fromell, äke

In a chemical system fractoemitted particles are controlled for stimulation and quenching, respectively, the reactivity of said system. In a first embodiment the chemical system comprises friction matches and the match head comprises a substance having a high exoelectron activity.

In another embodiment the system comprises a stabilizer, which is capable of absorbing reactive particles resulting from fractoemission.

Match head formulations suitable for the production of safety matches and matches that may be struck anywhere are described which include metal chelate complexes of iron, copper, chromium or vanadium and citric acid, lactic acid, tartaric acid and EDTA. The metal chelate complexes may be combined with conventional match head compositions in which chromium compounds, sesqui-based phosphorus compounds, sulphur compounds and oxides of zinc present or preferably combined with environmentally friendly compositions using either amorphous phosphorus or, optionally, in the case of match head formulations suitable for the production of safety matches, an iron phosphide known as ferrophosphorus. These formulations are environmentally friendly both in manufacture and use. Environmentally friendly match head formulations which may be brightly coloured are also described.
