A bicycle wheel rim can be worn down by rim brakes, leading to serious accidents. The present invention relates to a novel bicycle rim that provides direct and clear indication to a rider when a braking surface on the rim has been worn off. The novel bicycle rim comprises a base portion, two lateral flanks forming an outer braking surface, and a longitudinal hole. The braking surface has a first portion and a second portion. The first portion of the braking surface has a thickness that is designed to be worn off down to the longitudinal hole so as to form a visible slit, while the second portion, situated radially outwards with respect to the first portion, has a thickness such as to prevent deformations of the second portion when the first portion is worn off down to the longitudinal hole.

185 | Bicycle wheel rim with resilient wear-resisting rings to minimize wearing of a tire | US09294540 | 1999-04-19 | US06216758B1 | 2001-04-17 | Chao-Ying Chen |
A bicycle wheel rim includes a rim body having an annular spoke-mounting wall and spaced left and right annular tire-retaining walls, and a pair of wear-resisting rings. The spoke-mounting wall has two annular lateral peripheral edges. The left and right annular tire-retaining walls extend integrally, radially, outwardly and respectively from the lateral peripheral edges of the spoke-mounting wall. Each of the tire-retaining walls has an inner surface that faces the other one of the tire-retaining walls to confine a tire receiving space therewith, an outer brake pad contacting surface opposite to the inner surface, and an annular end face distal to the spoke-mounting wall. Each of the tire-retaining walls further has a tire retaining projection, formed at a corner of the end face and the inner surface for engaging a bicycle tire so as to retain the bicycle tire between the tire-retaining walls. The wear-resisting rings are made of a resilient material. Each of the wear-resisting rings extends along the end face of a respective one of the tire-retaining walls, and projects radially and outwardly relative to the end face of the respective one of the tire-retaining walls to prevent the end face from contacting directly the bicycle tire to minimize wearing of the bicycle tire.

Further, the spoke (14) cross-section is symmetrical at the second end (18) connected to the wheel hub (20) and asymmetrical at the first end (16). The asymmetrical shape of the first end (16) is preferably an ellipse with a leading edge ellipse (30) shape that is constant from the first end (16) to the second end (18) and a trailing edge ellipse shape (32) that is the same dimension as the leading edge (30) at the second end (18) and thereafter decreases in dimension from the second end (18) to the first end (16). Further, in a preferred embodiment, the rim (12), and/or spoke(s) (14), is a hollow structure manufactured from multiple nested, tubular braids (40), (41) and (42).

A braking system for an automotive vehicle is provided which comprises, in combination, a wheel having a specifically-defined wheel rim for mounting a tire thereon, and a specifically-defined disc carrying the wheel rim for mounting the wheel upon a wheel support of the automotive vehicle. A cylindrical support is secured to the wheel. Radially-inwardly facing arcuate brake lining structures are secured to the cylindrical support. Brake shoes are mounted upon a non-rotatable part of the automotive vehicle in spaced positions around the rotational axis of the wheel support. A pressurized-fluid operating system of a specifically-defined structure is provided for moving the brake shoes in a braking action radially-outwardly from inactive positions towards, and frictionally-engaging, the brake lining structures, and for returning the brake shoes radially-inwardly to the inactive positions upon termination of said braking action. Primary additional structure is also provided for effecting movement of the brake shoes to further inactive positions by drawing pressurized-fluid from the braking system.

A wheel rim has spaced indentations in the rim to remove material from the rim and decrease wheel weight. The indentations may be elongated grooves, which are aligned with the axis of the wheel. The grooves are evenly spaced circumferentially about the wheel. Each groove's cross-section is an arc of a circle. The grooves extend into the rim more than one half of the rim's nominal thickness. The radius of the circle that form the cross-section is much larger than the groove's depth so that the edges of the grooves do not meet the rim's surface at a sharp angle. This intersection minimizes stress. The grooves may be in the rim's an inner or outer surfaces or in both surfaces. The application also discloses other configurations for the indentations.

In a combined wheel-disc assembly, the wheel disc surface is used as a brake rotor. The need for a separate disc rotor is eliminated and the assembly provides a large area for brake contact and desirable air cooling of the braking surface. Braking forces are balanced in the disclosed assembly. Holes may be provided in the wheel disc to increase air circulation.

A fiber reinforced plastic bicycle wheel rim is formed of six segments per side and formed in a section having precisely formed, machinable brake surfaces and preferably combining inner high modulus fiber reinforced plastic lamination as a main structural body and an outer lamination of improved frictional coefficient materials at the braking surfaces. The main structural body with overlapped individual sheets of unidirectional fiber reinforced plastic, having crossing fibers, in segments, and continuous unidirectional fiber bundles in areas of concentrated load, enables strong, light wheels for sew up or clincher tires to be formed.

This invention provides a wheel (20) having a rim (22) for mounting a tire (24) and also including a brake lining structure including a portion which is formed of friction material (44) which extends at least partially around the rotational axis of the wheel (20) in a position which is radially-inwards of the rim (22). The brake lining structure including a portion which is formed of friction material (44) has a radially-inner frictional material braking surface for engagement by arcuate brake arms (60) of a wheel assembly when the arcuate brake arms (60) are forced radially-outwards. The wheel (20), upon removal from a vehicle, may be changed for replacement of the brake lining structure. The brake lining assembly thus has a unitary brake lining structure including a portion which is formed of friction material (44) which is concentrically carried within a brake lining carrier (50). An automotive vehicle on which such wheels (20) are mounted includes mechanism for drawing fluid from a fluid operated braking system to cause the arcuate brake arms (60) to move further radially-inwardly with respect to the wheel (20) to enable the wheel (20) to be easily removed from the automotive vehicle without interference by the arcuate brake arms (20).
