61 Absorbent sheet exhibiting resistance to moisture penetration US11974864 2007-10-16 US07846296B2 2010-12-07 Phuong V. Luu; Steven L. Edwards; David W. White; Brigitte K. Schauer; Martin A. Hynnek
An absorbent paper sheet is treated with an aqueous wax dispersion such that the sheet includes a fused wax and emulsifier residue in an amount of from about 1 to about 20 weight percent of the sheet based on the combined weight of the fiber, wax residue and an emulsifier residue in the sheet. The fused wax emulsion operates to make at least one surface of the sheet laterally hydrophobic, exhibiting a moisture penetration delay of at least about 2 seconds and less than about 40 seconds as well as a typical contact angle with water at one minute of at least about 50 degrees. There is thus provided absorbent products which exhibit both absorbency and resistance to moisture penetration. The treated sheet further exhibits microbial barrier properties, impeding transfer of bacteria, for example, through the sheet. There are produced tissue products which resist moisture penetration from propelled liquids as well as sequester sorbed liquids in the interior of the tissue.

65 Insulated subsea pipe, and materials and methods for applying thermal insulation to subsea pipe US10847645 2004-05-17 US20050095380A1 2005-05-05 Lou Watkins; William Cuming
A plurality of concentric plastic tubes are drawn over a steel flowline pipe, with the annuli thus formed between the successive layers of tubing filled with an appropriate insulating material to form a length of pipe suitable for use in a subsea pipeline. The length of steel flowline pipe is at least partially encased lengthwise by a first insulating core of interstitial material. A first length of polymeric tubing is coaxial with the length of steel pipe and radially separates the first insulating core and a second insulating core of interstitial material. A second length of polymeric tubing is radially exterior to the second insulating core, and provides a protective coating for the pipe. Advantageously, the insulated length of pipe may be formed without extruding or molding, and as a result expensive dies and molds are not required.

68 Method of reducing chipping and contamination of reservoirs and channels in thermal ink printheads during dicing by vacuum impregnation with protective filler material US970499 1992-11-02 US5306370A 1994-04-26 Lawrence H. Herko; Robert P. Altavela; Joseph R. Weber; Robert M. White; Kathryn A. Wallace
A method of fabricating thermal ink jet printheads comprises aligning and bonding a pair of silicon wafers together, which have, on opposing confronting surface thereof, a plurality of sets of linear arrays of heating elements and associated driver circuitry on one wafer surface and a plurality of sets of parallel grooves and a communicating reservoir for each set of grooves. The grooves and reservoirs are filled with a filler material which is solid or gels at room temperature and liquid at higher temperatures. The bonded pair of wafers are severed into a plurality of individual printhead sby dicing processes conducted at room temperature. One of the dicing processes cuts the grooves in a direction perpendicular thereto in order to form concurrently the nozzle face and nozzles. The solid filler material supports fragile edges of the wafers and prevents entry of dicing debris and other contaminants. The printheads are subjected to heat, spinning, and high pressure water spray to remove the filler material.
