A method of manufacturing an automobile door hinge includes hot forging a round steel bar to form a forged workpiece including a mounting portion, an arm portion, and a column portion, and forming a shaft hole by punching the column portion by using a special die and a punch. The die has a gap formed therein so that, during punching, a slug is not generated and the column portion expands outward when the punch is pressed from a punching start point to a predetermined dimension, and a slug is generated and discharged when the punch is pressed from the predetermined dimension to a punching end point.
23 Hidden Interlocking Hinge Assembly US13774407 2013-02-22 US20130219796A1 2013-08-29 Edward G. Wolk
The hidden interlocking hinge assembly at least partially hides or conceals the hinging mechanism of a door pivotally attached to a jamb. The assembly incorporates interlocking knuckles on the door and the jamb, an overlapping flange feature, and a corresponding depression feature that allows the overlapping flange and the depression to move relative to the other without binding and while generally concealing the balance of the assembly.

The instant invention is a method and apparatus for assembling two hinge leaves. The apparatus includes an assembly for feeding a predetermined length of a wire pintle into a shear assembly. The shear assembly cuts the wire pintle to a specified length and locates the wire in a channel. Substantially simultaneously with the shearing of the wire, a punch and die assembly adjacent the shear assembly locates the two leaves of the hinge such that the barrels of the hinge are aligned. Once in position, a linear actuator drives the sheared length of wire pintle into the aligned hinge barrels to couple the two hinge leaves together. Once the pintle has been inserted, staking pins within the punch and die assembly impact select ones of the hinge barrels to keep the pintle in place. Also, disclosed is a novel method of manufacturing the two hinge leaves.

The present invention provides a method for manufacturing a high-strength motor vehicle door hinge from a steel plate blank at low cost. The method includes a cold heading step of forming a cylindrical bulging portion at one end of the blank in the width direction, a shaft hole forming step of forming a shaft hole in the cylindrical bulging portion, and a shaft hole finishing step. In the shaft hole forming step, a shaft hole is formed using a first punch having a top end with a shape of a cone and first die having an inner wall with a gap volume relative to the outer circumferential surface of the cylindrical bulging portion of the blank. The size of the gap volume is set so that when the first punch punches the cylindrical bulging portion of the blank, a hole portion formed from an end at which machining of the first punch starts to a predetermined length position does not produce a punched slug and the cylindrical bulging portion bulges outward and a hole portion from the predetermined length position to the end at which the machining of the first punch ends produces a punched slug to be ejected. In the shaft hole finishing step, the shaft hole is finished from the end at which the machining of the first punch ends using a second die having a shape substantially the same as the shape of the first die and a second punch having a top end with a shape of a truncated cone or a cone and the largest diameter that is larger than that of the first punch.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manufacture a high strength door hinge for an automobile at low cost from a steel round bar by hot forging, punching, etc.SOLUTION: A forged product 33a including a mounting section, an arm section, and a column-shaped section 7a having a circular horizontal cross-section is formed by hot forging a steel round bar, and a shaft hole 6 in which a hinge pin is inserted so as to penetrate through the axis of the column-shaped section 7a is formed in the column-shaped section 7a by means of punching using a specialized die 52a and a punch 51. The die 52a has a gap which is formed so that, in forming the shaft hole 6, when the punch 51 is moved from the start position of punching by a predetermined distance, the punch 51 forms a hole while causing the column-shaped section 7a to swell outward without producing punch debris, and when the punch 51 is moved to the end position of punching from the position at the predetermined distance from the start position of punching, the punch 51 forms a hole while producing punch debris which is discharged through the gap. The method enables the shaft hole 6 to have a height which is two or more times as large as the diameter of the punched hole, and as a result, the door hinge for an automobile has sufficient strength and can be manufactured at low cost.

PURPOSE: To obtain a lightweight, pedestal-shaped hinge having high strength by precisely punching a sheet material thence subjecting the same to required cold forging thereby forming pedestals and shaft cylinders with one metal. CONSTITUTION: A thick-walled sheet material is finely blanked to make a primarily worked blank material 2 for hinges. This material 2 is erected on a stationary die 3 and is upset with square base parts 2a for working pedestals, thence it is swaged by die forging with a male die 4 from the top parts of projected parts 2b for working shaft cylinders. By this swaging, the base parts 2a are elongated P 2 to forge pedestals 5a while the material around the projected parts 2b is being moved P 1. At the same time, the shaft cylinder parts 5b are formed by shaft cylinder forming parts 4a, whereby a secondarily worked blank material 5 is obtained. Thence, the amorphous swaged parts elongated from the base parts 2a are cut off and the shaft cylinder parts 5b are pierced with shaft insertion holes 5d, thence mounting holes 5e are pierced in the pedestal parts 5a, whereby a pedestal-hsaped hinge 5A is formed.
