A contour cementing machine for applying latex cement in complex shapes to flat work pieces, such as shoe parts, belts, luggage parts, etc. The contour cementing machine includes a housing mounting die means, a removable tray for containing cement, means for maintaining the cement at a predetermined level, and means for actuating the die means. Preferably, the actuating means is pneumatic. Preferably, the die means is characterized by ease of convertibility of differing sizes, shapes and styles of work pieces. |

Metal parts are coated with one or more layers of a solvent-based adhesive using a roller coating procedure. The adhesive solution is transferred from a supply reservoir to the metal part by a natural fiber felt covered roll. The freshly coated part is then dried and the coating and drying procedure repeated until a layer of adhesive of desired thickness is built up. The use of a natural fiber felt covered roll permits uniform transfer and application of the adhesive at efficiencies above 90% (ratio of adhesive on the part to total adhesive used). |

The present invention is an improvement in a machine described in U.S. Pat. No. 4,046,106 for applying a daub of liquid resin to the threads of a bolt-like fastener. In the unimproved machine the daub was applied by moving the fasteners tangentially to a disc-like applicator wheel. The improvement includes a number of notches in the circumferential edge of the applicator wheel. The fasteners engage the notches with the result that the patch of resin applied extends around the threaded fastener farther in the circumferential direction. |

Apparatus is provided for applying a thin film of liquid to a workpiece. Although the apparatus with be described as a convenient means for waxing skis, it will become apparent as the description proceeds that it has wider application. The apparatus includes a motor driven drum which is dipped in a pan containing the liquid to be applied to the workpiece, and which when rotated causes a coating of the liquid to adhere to the surface of the drum. A metering rod, which may be flat, round, or of any other appropriate shape, is supported on the surface of the drum in a position extending parallel to the axis of rotation of the drum. The metering rod has sufficient weight so that it does not turn with the drum but rests against a stationary support bracket which is mounted on the frame of the apparatus adjacent to the drum, and which also extends parallel to the axis of rotation of the drum. However, with a round metering rod, the metering would still be accomplished even if it rotated. The metering rod is shaped to define a predetermined space between its surface and the surface of the drum, and this space determines the thickness of the liquid coating adhering to the drum surface. |

A wood staining system comprises a first staining tank with drive rollers and brushes mounted on movable arbors. The staining tank has a removable liner for quick cleanup. A sump is swingably mounted beneath the tank to a position outwardly of the tank for ease of replacement of fluid either stain or solvent into the sytem. Hydraulic power is delivered from a central hydraulic power supply to a control panel on the staining machine. A second tank is provided in second location and can receive the removable arbors for cleaning the rollers and brushes. Hydraulic jumper lines are inter-connected between the main control panel and the cleaning apparatus so that a power source and control panel serves both staining and cleaning machines.

A paint applicator including a frame plate of generally rectangular configuration having a front surface and a rear surface and side edges which are tapered proximate their ends, a flexible backing plate proximate said front surface for mounting an absorbent pad, substantially parallel channel flanges on said backing plate fro engaging the central portion of said side edges of said frame plate in complementary mating engagement, lugs extending outwardly from said front surface of said frame plate for bracketing the ends of said backing plate to thereby prevent the backing plate from shifting from its position on the frame plate, disengagement between said lugs and the ends of said backing plate being permitted by squeezing the channel flanges toward each other in the area of said tapered ends to cause said backing plate to bow away from the front surface of the frame plate preparatory to effecting sliding disengagement between the backing plate and the frame plate, a handle on the rear surface of the frame plate, and an indexing mechanism for permitting selective positioning of the handle about an axis extending substantially perpendicularly to the backing plate.

A device for applying coating to a succession of traveling cylindrical objects includes a pair of discs on the outer peripheral portion of which the coating is carried to the objects. A spreader projects between the discs contacting them inwardly of the zone of coating application and spreads the discs so that entry between the discs of the objects to be coated is facilitated.

An apparatus and method for high speed roll-coating application of high viscosity coatings on a succession of individual, advancing, flat, box blanks, especially such blanks of limp paper, without ''''wind-up'''' on the rolls and without ''''globbing'''' at the roll nip. A resilient rubber-coating applicator roll forms a coating nip with a hard faced backer roll and the applicator roll is arcuately deformed by backer roll and the applicator roll is arcuately deformed by backer roll pressure at the nip to avoid ''''wind-up'''' on the applicator roll while the hard face of the backer roll is covered with minute, closely-spaced recesses to avoid ''''wind-up'''' thereon while also carrying ''''globs'''' through the nip for disposal. The metering roll may also be recessed and form an arcuate depression in the metering nip for advantageous results.
