125 | A FREE FALL TOWER FOR FUNFAIRS | EP00911258.2 | 2000-03-10 | EP1187664A1 | 2002-03-20 | FABBRI, Alberto |
A free-fall tower for funfairs comprises a support structure (2) along which a passenger capsule (4) is mobile in both directions. The capsule (4) is brought from a lower position, in which the passengers board, to an upper position, from which a rapid free fall begins. The descending capsule (4) is braked until it reaches a halt. A plurality of fluid-dynamic cylinders (9) are loaded by the capsule (4) during a last tract of the upwards travel thereof, and energy thus accumulated in the cylinders (9) is released in order to thrust the capsule (4) groundwards during the first tract of drop thereof. The force of the mechanical thrust of the cylinders (9), added to the force of gravity, considerably increases the passenger's sensation of free-falling.

This invention is an amusement ride for catapulting a person enclosed with a capsule (7) into the air. The ride comprises a siege type catapult (30) and a releasable connected capsule (7). In the launch position a release mechanism (31) is triggered by the operator, and the rider (24) is catapulted into the air at a physiologically safe rate of acceleration along a predictable free flight arc. When an acceptable elevation is reached, the rider is separated from the capsule (7) and gently brought back to earth using an automatically deploying parachute or similar device. An alternate embodiment envisions the use of a similar device to project a conveyance vehicle along a horizontal track similar to a stone skipping across the water.

The invention concerns an amusement device (1) having one or a plurality of passenger carriers (2) and a frame (3). The device preferably takes the form of a dropping framework. An eddy current brake (4) is provided for braking the movable passenger carriers. The eddy current brake (4) is preferably in the form of a linear brake and, owing to the influence on the various braking factors, is constructed such that it develops a substantially constant braking effect whilst compensating the decreasing dropping speed.

The invention concerns an amusement ride system in which at least one passenger unit (1) is raised up a vertical tower (2) by a lift (4) before returning by free fall to its lower starting position. To enhance passengers' enjoyment of the ride while ensuring that the free fall is kept safely under control, it is proposed that a brake system (14) be provided in the lower section of the fall and kept in constant braking readiness; this system is used to slow the descent speed of the passenger unit (1) down to zero. The passengers (10) sit in the open passenger units (1) with their backs towards the tower (2) and are held in securely by hoop guards (9).

The ride (10) is capable of raising a rider (22) to a height of ten meters or more above the ground, and then releasing the rider to swing. It includes a support structure (12), a support line (16) secured to the support structure at one end, with an opposed end secured to a rider, preferably to an attachment which is worn by a rider (20). A launch structure (26) is spaced from the support structure (12) and carries a launch line (24) which has an end (48) which is capable of being raised and lowered above the ground, and which is designed to be releasably attached to a rider attachment, so as to lift a rider from the ground. In operation the rider attachment with the support line attached is secured to the rider, the launch line is releasably secured to the attachment, and the launch line is activated to move the rider laterally and upwardly towards the top of the launch structure. When the launch line is released from the attachment which carries the rider, the rider swings downwardly at a high speed simulating the sensation of "body flight" in a pendulum like motion.

An amusement ride is formed from a self-equalizing dual line affixed to a pulley at its upper end and to pulley and counterweight system at its lower end. An upper platform at the upper dual line end launches a rider who is connected via a line to a pulley riding on the dual line. A slide is carried by the upper platform from which the rider is launched, resulting in the rider swinging in an arcuate motion about the pulley. A belay, carried by the dual line, is movable to confront the pulley as the rider is carried down the dual lines and to enhance the arcuate swinging of the rider. A lower landing permits the rider to demount the amusement ride.

It is disclosed a water amusement ride (1) comprising at least one vehicle (2) comprising means (6) for accommodating at least one passenger, a container (10) for storing water having an opening (10a) to define a water surface (S). The vehicle (2) is movable between a raised position (RP) with respect to the water surface (S), and a stop position (SP), in which at least part of the vehicle is submerged in the water. The ride further comprises lifting means (30) to move the vehicle from the stop position to the raised position, and wherein the vehicle (2) moved from the raised position (RP) towards said stop position (SP) is decelerated by the contact with water in said container (10) to reach the stop position (SP).
