PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a pyrotechnic ignition device having an ignition property needed to rapidly transmit a flame to a main filler and having enough sensitivity for ignition by a flame initiation device. SOLUTION: A tubular spiral coil 10 includes a section 15 where it reduces its outer diameter and wall thickness from an ignition initiation position 13 to a combustion direction downstream side. The configuration of the section 15 increases a speed of combustion and violence of the same. A pyrotechnic sheet including a substrate of an oxidizable polymer film coated with oxidizable metal e.g. magnesium coiled around a cruciate axial former 11. A filler may be formed by winding a sheet into a right cylindrical tubular coil and extruding the coil from the center in the direction of combustion and axially. COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO

PURPOSE: To provide a gas generator for such an expansion-type cushion for passengers in an automobile, that is equipped with a relief-opening for relieving excess pressure in the case of its accidental generation. CONSTITUTION: A generator 1 is equipped with a rotating hollow body which is unified in such a manner that one end is closed by a cover 2 and the other end has an opening 4. A closed ring 27 has a tilted rim 36, and the outer surface 37 of the ring is round. An end part 39 of the opening 4 goes round onto the outer side surface. When the internal pressure of the generator is over the predetermined value, opening of the end part 39 of the opening 4 results in releasing the ring 27 in the direction opposite to a passenger in an automobile. Thus, any danger can be prevented in the explosion of the generator.

PURPOSE: To provide an air bag inflator in which a uniform performance can be attained over a wide temperature range and a propulsion neutral structure can be held. CONSTITUTION: An air bag inflator 22 has a plurality of gas discharging orifices having different three kinds of size and the air bag holds the same performance over a surrounding temperature range up to +85 deg.C as well as a propulsion neutral action. All the generated gas are guided to enter the air bag under the surrounding temperature and further a part of the gas is guided at +85 deg.C away from the air bag. Each of the orifices of different three sizes is covered by a collapsible foil, as an inner pressure of the inflator becomes a first predetermined pressure, the first orifice 28 is opened and as the surrounding temperature exceeds +85 deg.C, the third orifice 34 is opened and the gas is not discharged into the air bag, but discharged out of the vehicle.

PURPOSE: To provide an ignition assembly which stably activates an inflatable safety device. CONSTITUTION: The ignition assembly 358 has an actuation piston 362, percussion primer 366 and ignition material 370 isolated by a retention pin 402. When a sufficient force is exerted on the actuation piston 362, the retention pin 402 fails such that the actuation piston 362 moves toward the percussion primer 366 and impacts the same. As a result, the propellant 334 within a gas generator 326 is ignited. The resulting propellant 334 gases are introduced to a prescribed direction. The projectile 294 to impart the actuation piston 362 has a role of breaking a closure disk 282. Stored gases are supplied to an enclosure prior to the gases of the propellant 334 by the breaking of this closure disk 282. The projectile 294 breaks the closure disk 282 in a manner as to avoid the generation of splinters from the closure disk 282. Then, the closure in the inflatable safety device by the splinters of the disk 282 is prevented and the safety of the operation of the inflatable safety device is assured.

CONSTITUTION: A chamber 32 is surrounded within the range of at least one opening 82 by a distributor casing, and the distributor casing includes a plurality of gas outlet openings 58. The gas outlet opening 58 is connected as a whole with a chamber 32 when the chamber 32 is opened through a chamber 70 restricted by the distributor casing 52.
